25 January 2008

Today at work, I slipped away from my duties to sneak a quick smoke.[More:] When I returned roughly five minutes later, I was informed that our cashiers had waited on ROBERT FUCKING PLANT! (He bought a Paul Bowles book and was a very gentlemanly customer I'm told. Although in my mind's eye he came up to the register and said "I'd like to buy this book, BABYBABYBABY!!" and thrusting his hips out and tossing his mane back.) 'm a huge Zep fan and I get Corky running over my feet and these people get ROBERT FUCKING PLANT!

Life is unfair. Oh well, here's a picture of a dog I took today.
Today at work, one of my co-workers gave me a stack of Led Zeppelin boots from the '73 US tour. Coincidence?

Also, I've heard that Mr. Plant is indeed a Nice Guy.

Damn, jon, that's a head-smack moment for sure.

So I'm told. I was wearing my orange Sonics t-shirt today. I know that Monseiur Plant is a big garage rock fan. Maybe he would've been impressed and invited me out for a beer.

(also, I think that dog picture is begging to be LOLDOGS'd, but my Photoshop-fu is nonexistent. "I can haz spair chanje?" maybe, or "What is you l00kin' at?' perhaps?)

My only brush with him confirms that he is, in fact, A Nice Guy. In Austin in the late 80s, I happened to be present in a shop where Robert Plant showed up. His attempt to do some quiet shopping was thwarted by the overzealous affections of the saleswomen.

He tried to be gracious as he backed out of the boutique, toward me where I sat on a bench waiting near the door... then he tripped over the sizeable hangbag I had put on the floor next to me. After he recovered his balance, he apologized profusely to me. Though he was desperate to make his escape, he wouldn''t leave until I repeatedly assured him that I was fine, my handbag was fine, and it was my fault anyway.

Robert Plant does seem like a nice guy. I saw him recently on Charlie Rose. Interview here. It was a repeat of a 2005 interview. He has done another with Rose more recently. He's a very interesting, unpretentious person.

While not Robert Plant, I got a photo taken with my personal musical hero Richard Thompson. The connection here being that he was in a band with Sandra Denny who sang the duet with Robert Plant "The Battle of Evermore". Life is one big series of connections. It's the interconnectiveness of it all...

My brush with Mr. Plant is tenuous indeed -- in fact, it was not me but my sister who once bowled in the next lane.

Isn't it awesome that ROBERT. FREAKING. PLANT! goes bowling?

And that new record he made with Alison Krauss is way better than it has any right to be.

I was just going to say.... do you think Alison Krauss would hang out with someone who wasn't a nice guy? I mean, really!

I know nothing about Robert Plant, but damn, that's a really cute dog!

I wouldn't sweat it jonmc, while it may have been nice to meet him, celebrity encounters are weird. In the few I have had, usually in other places since Western Michigan is not celebrity central, I usally make sort of a ass of myself by smiling like an idiot and muttering inanities.

Plus, your mental image of how he bought the book is almost certainly much more entertaining than the reality. In fact, I think you should do your part to advance the Robert Plant legend, by making that your official version of how Robert Plant once bought a book in the place where you worked. It would be amusing for you, and it would probably fit a lot of your listeners expectations.

Bummer, jonmc. He apparently is a really nice guy - a friend of mine still gets xmas cards from him after they jammed together in Morocco many years ago.

No Plant here - but I have however dined in a Denny's with Timbuk3 and also shared crosswalk space with Peter Buck from REM. Nearly shat my pants at that. Also - Timbuk3 in a Denny's at 1am is not where you want to be. I'm convinced that there may be a secret necromantic portal in Denny's nationwide.
