DJ Haidz: This Is Your Post! [More:]

I'm in RPM Challenge this year and I'm doing the hip kid laptop cut creatah thang. I want to know from teh Mechazens who DJ (as in real music making, not Mecharadio) what software that's yummy for laptop electronica you would recommend. The Challenge starts in a week and I want to make my software choice with enough time to get the basics down before I destroy the world with my sonic bliss.

Knock me out, Blippitybloopers!
audacity...

If you are using a PC, I like FL Studio

Do you want a sequencer, or a synth emulator, or something that emulates turntables (with or without physical decks), or a loop-based deal, or what?

Are you talking about DJing/mixing or creating tracks/songs?

hey, that rpm challenge sounds like fun!

if i had the time to commit to that, i'd probably use ableton live. it's scary how versatile that program is. i'm also rather fond of a program called audiomulch.

What I want is a do-it-all program that is beginner level or has an interface that I can learn quickly. I want virtual instruments with lots of tracks, and Fruity Loops beats to tweak. I want to create a sound similar to Orbital or Boards of Canada - that really mellow but definitely warped and fuzzy sound.

I want an album that sounds like a shuttle ride to the airport in the pre-dawn hours after 3 hours or less of sleep.

philip jeck's "surf" album comes very, very close to that.

(btw, it's fairly easy to replicate b.o.c.-like synth tones in ableton...)

Tracktion isn't bad - I didn't read the help files and threw a couple of things together that weren't really *good*, but not bad, and it was all pretty easy. MixMeister's good for creating mixes of existing (pre-done) tracks, and allows you to get pretty inventive with mixing multiple tracks. I haven't tried it with mixing audio bites into songs, but it seems the former prog's better than that, in my limited experience. Naturally those two cost money. Audacity is great for editing and adjusting songs, but is too clunky and limited (in that specific regard) for me if I try to compose a piece from scratch.
