How good was the playlist at the party in Cloverfield? Seriously. Perfect!
I probably don't spend enough time on the internet, so I haven't been driven to the backlash camp.
Incidentally, the movie's pretty good. It does a lot of things well that these types of movies generally don't (it does still fall in some of the same traps). There are plenty of 'cheap parlor tricks', but the gimmick of the film didn't strike me as overall gimmicky. (In this case, it's a moronic criticism anyway.)
A lot of people will definitely not like it, because it both is a mainstream monster movie and decidedly isn't. I heard the guy in back of me say, "I think we're going to have to go to Blockbuster to rescue this evening." It's not neatly bundled; there aren't scientists running around explaining what the monster is and how to defeat it; it opens with a ton of character exposition; on the other hand, a lot of goofy, goofy stuff happens.
If it means anything, it's almost guaranteed to enter the cultural lexicon though.
Also. What we hear of the playlist at the party is an awesome party playlist!

You wouldn't have to be. A week ago, I was taking a smoke break at work and I saw some 'street team' person plastering posters for it all over the place. And it's what? A monster movie?
That's been done, I think.
as for the playlist: aside from the Parliament song, I haven't heard any of it and I have a feeling I wouldn't like it if I did.
I loved hearing a snippet of "West Coast" by Coconut Record (Jason Schwartzmann). I was all "Omg! 'West Coast'!!" because I seriously love that song based, quite possibly, entirely on the fact that I think it's totally adorable just like Jason Schwartzmann. It's like him...in song form.
Also in the movie but not on the list is Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls... which I felt was a very nice touch. (it is also totally up your alley, jon!)
