I had not thought about him in years, but John Stewart was huge to me. California
Bloodlines
is a lovely lovely album. The Phoenix Concerts is one of the best live albums ever.[More:]

He faded, and put out some pretty crappy stuff, such as Bombs Away Dream Babies, but I suppose it made him some well deserved money.

I wish I had come MP3's but my fandom was way pre-digital.

I can't hold it on the road when you're sittin' right beside me
And I'm drunk out of my mind
Merely from the fact that you are here

And I have not been known as the saint of San Joaquin
And I'd just as soon right now
Pull on over to the side of the road
And show you what I mean
In my grief, I forgot the MI button. Help?

Wow. My dad was a huge Kingston Trio fan, and that's how I knew John Stewart. We'll have to do something to mark his passing. As I got older and got more into roots music, I understood that the Kingston Trio were in many ways really cheesy. On the other hand, they were so important in sparking a folk revival that resulted in a lot of great research and recording and popularized some excellent songs. Thanks for posting this.

There IS a rural California, or at least was, and his music captured it perfectly.
