19 January 2008

I am so mad at myself I went out last night with my best friend to a bar where I know the staff. [More:]I had too much to drink and ended up getting sick at the bar (at least I had sense enough to go to the restroom to get sick). My friend brought me home in a cab, and I got sick in the cab too. I'm really embarrassed, to say the least. The only other time I've gotten that drunk and sick was in 1995. The really bad thing is that I have my friend's phone, so I can't call him. I'm going to have to show up at his apartment. Oh yeah, it seems I left my glasses at the bar, so I'll have to go back in there today, which I'm dreading.
People have gotten sick at bars before. Leave a tip when you pick up your glasses.

Oh, smich. I know pretty much exactly how you're feeling.

Except in my case, instead of puking in a cab, I dashed out of my friend's car while he was stopped at a stoplight and tried to run home, spraining my ankle in the process and breaking my glasses.

Aw, ((smich)). That sucks, but like item said, people get sick at bars all the time. It happens, and it ain't the end of the world. When I do something I am embarrassed by, I console myself by reassuring my battered ego that I hadn't in any way changed the course of world history as a result of my stupidity. Nobody died, right? At least not as a result of you yakking at a bar last night. Coulda been worse. See how this works? Rinse and repeat.

Muddgirl, that really sucks, but it also makes me feel a bit better and not so alone in acting foolishly after a night of drinking.

Msali: Your advice is very good. I have been beating myself up for this all morning, which really isn't doing any good.

I'm definitely leaving a fat tip when I go in today to get my glasses.

Yeah, I'd definitely say you're not alone. Thank your friend sheepishly and profusely, then buy him lunch or something.

And if it helps, the view from the other side is that I genuinely appreciated those patrons who would come back and try to make it better for the person who had to clean up after them -- in the bar business (especially!), we knew that people sometimes get drunk and do embarrassing things. Even the ones we liked. So, don't feel bad smich.

If you know the staff, then they'll know that this is uncommon behaviour for you (I assume!) so they're almost certainly going to treat you differently from an anonymous customer, especially if your aim was good when you were sick in the toilet! So, yeah, just go in there, apologise if you need to, and get your glasses.

As for your friend: test the water, but muddgirl's suggestion is good.

Hope your hangover isn't too bad.

You got sick in a cab. That means you didn't drive. +1 for you.

Turns out my friend is okay with everything. He emailed me this morning and was laughing about the whole thing. He'd never seen me like that in all the years we've known each other, and I guess he was amused by it. I'll be able to laugh about it eventually, once I'm over the embarrassment of it. My friend and I are going out for breakfast in a bit. Hooray.

Glad it worked out! If it makes you feel any better, I puked my guts up under some bushed in the parking lot once and my boss had to carry me to the car.

I have a stupid question about the cab. Did you have to give the cabbie more money, or make him wait at your house while you cleaned it up?

If it makes you feel any better, yesterday I had to pee in a parking lot at dusk. It was either that or have an accident on a new suit. This being San Francisco, no one seemed to notice or bat an eye, so well, okay then.

smich, I dunno if reading my drama thread below will make it better or worse, but it might help to know that people can, and have done much, much worse, and despite all that, we're still good people.

I mean christ back when I was a yout', among my circle of friends it was like some fucked-up badge of honour to brag about how many places you'd yakked in / passed out in / got kicked out of, blablabla. This led to some amazing amounts of stupidity.

*gentle whuffles* Agree with everyone else - you get major bonus points for not driving yourself home. Hope the hangover's not too awful, kiddo.

Well, at the office Christmas party this year (of all the very, very bad places) there wasn't enough food and there was a lot of wine and I got very, very happy and then tipped over into massively drunk. I think I fell down a few times, and apparently I brought my little dog in to meet everyone. Got sick on the way home, and managed to pee on my car seat whilst vomiting. I woke up the next day, and had to go into work, and I was still drunk... the hangover didn't hit until about 9 a.m. and I wanted to die.

I'm still employed there. So, it's not always as bad as you think it is.

The tip for the barstaff is a really nice idea.

My friend who was with me last night just told me the story about the cab over breakfast. I was too far gone to remember the details. The driver actually threw us out. We hadn't gone far, maybe a block or two, and she was very upset that I'd gotten sick in her cab. My friend offered to pay for it or to clean it himself, but the driver was so angry that she yelled for us to get out. We got into another cab right away. I didn't get sick in that one. I know which cab company she works for, so I'm going to try to find her so that I pay for the cleanup.

Oh, and my friend had my glasses!

Three stories about being sick from drinking:
1. Once the BF and I were doing lots of shots while I was making dinner. I finished cooking, took a couple of bites of my food and got up to go to the bathroom. I wasn't going to be sick, I just really had to pee. Honest. Apparently, I locked the bathroom door behind me (something I never do) and passed out while sitting on the toilet. The BF got worried about me because I never came back to eat dinner. When I didn't answer him calling through the bathroom door, he broke in and found me. The noise of him coming in woke me up and I was so embarassed! He moved me into bed, but the movement made me want to throw up. He was a good BF and got me a garbage can to puke in - and then cleaned it up.

2. The same BF and I were at the bar together. We were both tanked. It was close to closing time when I went to tbe bathroom because I was going to be sick. I took too long in the bathroom, and the BF thought I left without him, so he went home. I had not brought my purse because the BF was carrying everything I needed. I also thought he had taken my jacket with him. I had puke on my pants, maybe a little on my shirt, and only $2 in my pocket - not enough for a cab home from where I was. I used my $2 to get a train pass to the stop closest to home, but I was still a mile away and the bus had stopped running (it was about 3 or 4am). So I walked a mile home, in a tank top, in November, in Chicago. When I got home, I didn't have any keys, so I had to break in by climbing through our bedroom window (which was thankfully unlocked). And there the BF was, sound asleep. The next day, we had to go back to the bar, close his tab and get our jackets.

3. We had a new girl at my old job, so we invited her to come out for drinks after work in the suburbs. I ended up taking a group of my work friends back to the city with me and the new girl was one of them. We met up with some other people and were having a good time. New girl and I were getting along really well and having a long conversation when she excused herself to go to the bathroom. She never came back. After a while, I went in to check on her. She was so sloppy drunk and I had no idea how it happened. One minute she was talking to me like normal, the next minute she was babbling and falling over. I helped her out of the bar, got cash from my other friends and took her back to my house in a cab. When we got there, the cabbie offered to help me carry her into the house. She could kinda walk, so I took care of it myself. When I got her into the apartment, she said she needed to pee and I was going to get her some pj's to sleep in. She didn't answer when I knocked on the door, so I went in to find her passed out on the toilet. I tried to get her up and onto the couch. She threw up on my bathroom floor and all over herself. I cleaned it up. After 45 minues of trying to move her, I gave up and locked her in there. She didn't talk to me for a month at work because she was so embarassed.

One story about getting thrown out of a cab:
My friend's brother was visiting - both he and my friend are from South Africa. Because so many cab drivers around here are from Africa, he and my friend always talk to the driver to see where he's from etc. So... brother asks the driver where he's from. It was somewhere like Pakistan. Then brother asks the driver if he's part of Hamas. Cab driver pulls over and throws us out in the middle of a horrible neighborhood. I was terrified.
