SO JAZZED. Oh, the world is righteous. I am holding in my hands a $200 check from the Santa Barbara County Auditor! →[More:]

The 21 year old who hit us 13 months ago on the 101 freeway doing 105 mph with a rental car, while drunk and stoned, blasting Gnarls Barkley and eating Starburst, rolling us twice down a 30 foot ravine and leaving us with $8,000 in unmet debt is complying with the terms of her probation and making reparations! I never thought she would! Maybe it's because I hugged her and told her mistakes happen before they put me in the ambulance.

Anyway, there's no way for the county to make her pay this. And as a young kid with a felony DUI and probably no more financial aid, I wasn't sure she'd even be able to pay, so I'd written it off.

But here's payment #1!!

(Sorry, hon. It's an excuse I heard plenty of times in college, and I freaked out each time. Impaired Driving Is Not OK, as this girl is probably realizing. I'm glad she's paying her dues, and I hope she can get on with her life.)

Sil, I was mad and flabbergasted when I found the beer and weed in the ditch (we went back to pick up all our stuff that flew out), because it meant that while I was clamoring through brush in the dark to give them CPR or whatever, they were ditching the drugs. But, I still felt bad for them. I hope she's straightened out, after getting a felony DUI at 21 years of age, and this check signifies that to some degree, she has.

chew: We got $5K for property damages and all medical expenses covered. However, the totalled car and other expenses made our net losses (aside from medical) about 13K. You see, the rental car company (Enterprise) had a clause of the vehicle code in their favor, as a "non-negligent owner" limiting their liability to 5K. She had not purchased additional insurance. She's liable for whatever losses the insurance didn't pay us, but as I said, there's no way the county can make her pay it. They just bill her and bug her, I take it.

I'm pretty good at rebounding from this kind of thing, but I do have some ptsd w/r/t freeway driving and graphic car accidents on tv and stuff now.

I'm with arse_hat - I've known people who have gone through similar moments, and I'm really impressed with you to find the humor in it, and be happy that you are around rather than bitter.
