Which private island will you buy when your ship has come in, you’ve won the lottery, and cashed in all your chips: will it be big or little, tropical or temperate, natural or artificial? [More:] Even though I won’t see that kind of money in many lifetimes, I was a little sorry to see this one has already been sold.

Some more private island links: Private Islands Magazine; Vladi Private Islands ; The Private Islands Blog; The Official Private Islands Blog; Forbes’ Most Expensive Private Islands 2006; How to Buy a Private Island.
Tropical. With comely natives.

Man, I wouldn't mind living on Mutton Island. (From the "temperate link.") Pagan gravestones? Smuggling dens? Ruined stone houses? Weighty mythological significance? It's almost absurdly cool.

I wonder how much it costs...

Probably not for sale, but I've been curious about this one for years. It's in the Columbia River and you can see it as you drive by on the I-84. It usually has a small sail boat moored at the dock, and there's a cool looking modernist wood house built on it.

I hadn't really thought much about the private island issue until last month, when I got the following email from a friend:

I had a dream last night that we were going to meet you on your private island for the holidays. It was warm and the sunlight lasted for many hours each day (unlike now in Delaware). The only drawback was that this time of year the waters surrounding the island are full of large spotted sharks, a la Steve Zissou. You had recently lost a few guests that did not heed your warnings about not swimming. We wore collapsible top hats.
