Cross-posting from AskMe. If anyone's got ideas for recording a huge group of people, lemme know! I will buy you a cookie! Or at least I will wish I could buy you a cookie!
40 is a lot of people. What quality? What is your budget? Transcription quality or broadcast quality? How much background noise already exists in the room?

Background noise: Hopefully not a ton, but it is during a lunch (we're hoping they'll be done eating before the talking starts).

Quality: I need to be able to understand it (and I'll be attending the event, so I'll have heard it live) in order to turn it into an essay/article.

The Zoom H2 mentioned in the AskMe thread is probably the optimum solution for budget versus quality.
