The Christmas Mountain Ranch (1, 2, 3), a 9,270-acre chunk of desert mountains in West Texas, was donated to the state in 1991 by the Conservation Fund. Last year, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson (the state's self-proclaimed official Realtor; scroll down to #9) announced that the his agency would auction the property because it was "too hard to manage." In an effort to keep the area accessible to the public, the Conservation Fund is considering re-purchasing the land in order to donate it to the National Park Service. The NPS wants it.
I remember reading about this somewhere. In the cobwebs of my memory I remember the family that owned it wanted it to remain public land. The Commissioner didn't want it to go to the NPS since it would preclude hunting on that land, and so is selling it off which went against the wishes of the family. Guy seems like a world class prick. I think I heard a story on NPR about it, and the Commissioner really came across as an asshole, not to mention crooked. I hope this ends well.
