Down In The Boondocks. Down In The Boondocks. Be sure to watch for the fancy footwork starting about 1:30. Eat your heart out Micheal Jackson! Recorded in 1965 by Billy Joe Royal.

By the time it hit the Brit pop charts→[More:] it had been covered by Gregory Phillips with production and guitar by Jimmy Page and with a b-side instrumental by Page. Despite all that, the Billy Joe Royal version crushed Gregory's version.

I used to love that song as a kid, but I seem to recall his voice being a bit... deeper.

wow. i always thought billy joe royal was black. i used to love this song - especially the little kick bass drum ditty. i was 12 in 1965.

Very nice!

Later on, it seems he goes country and western... and again does something rather amazing. Be sure to watch for the riding of the bicycle at around 1:20; how he manages in those tight pants is a wonder. Eat your heart out, Tom Jones! :)
