Photo Friday with two themes: What the hell is that? - A photo of something common or well known, but photographed in such a way that it's not so obvious. *AND/OR* Why the hell did I keep this?!? - Pictures of things you own and you have no clue why. Both suggested by DarkForest.[More:]

Also, we have scrapped the idea of picking a theme and picking a picker. I was thinking of just taking the suggestions we have and drawing them from a hat for the next few weeks. If anyone has objections, let me know. I'll post upcoming themes on the Wiki page and will try to do a reminder thread on Mondays.
I'm going with "Why the hell did I keep this?!?" as my apartment is full odd stuff that fits.

Big plastic candy cane - Story here.

Prepared Slides from Sears - A gift to the BF from his old roommate. He's not a science person, so I don't know why she gave them to him.

Insert from a flower arrangement I got from an ex - He's not even an important ex. In fact, he was a real jerk at the end of it, spiteful that I broke it off.

Oh, no no no, these themes were originally suggested by Slack-a-gogo, here, and combined/seconded by desjardins, rainbaby and BP. I liked them too, but was pretty late to the party.

Also, I see now that I misinterpreted the themes a bit. I photographed something that I really don't know what it is. I found it in my car a few years back after a car repair. I never bothered to take it back to the shop (bad of me, I know) and never bothered to throw it out either. It's just sat in its place in my garage for years waiting patiently for whatever happens next. So I guess my reason for keeping it is just laziness.

It's 6 feet of wire with a clamp at one end and an awl/probe thing at the other end. Maybe someone here can tell me what it's for. It kind of looks home made. It didn't look like much in a picture, but after torturing it a while in photoshop, I decided it might look good as an album cover. Now I just need the music to go with it.

What is this? Why do I have this? And does anybody want it?

The husband and his sister went Christmas shopping at their favorite consignment store last month. She bought this. Told him it was for him, take it home. He said he really didn't have the space for it - oh, and told her I would kill him if he brought any more stuff home. Then I called her and asked if he saw anything in the consignment store that he had his eye on and didn't get. "Well actually. . ." she says. Uuugh. So since I was the alleged bad guy, I ended up buying it from her to give to him. So, we don't want it and also actually bought it.

It's an antique punching bag apparatus. If you turn it sideways so the bag is down, you mount it to a wall.

We have no wallspace for something like this. Also, the bag has dryrot, so it isn't practical either. Maybe if we had a garage - oh, one we kept clean and organized, but we don't.

I'd be serious about giving it to anyone who wants it, but shipping costs would be prohibitive. I've you're driving the 95 corridor through Central VA, though, we can work something out.

Youngergirl44, I think the slides are cool.

It's a little wooden parrot that used to be on a backscratcher, but broke off. My old cat Ricky used to love playing with it, in fact, it still has his teeth marks in it. But my new cats don't like it, and it's now officially in the realm of junk I don't need to keep. But still I keep it.

Whoops. Can a mod hope my post and change the suggested by?

I think the slides are cool too, which is why I claimed them when the BF wanted to throw them out. There's no date on the box, so I don't know how old they are. I also don't know what to do with them.

That's a very cute parrot.

I have no idea what BP's picture is of. Maybe subatomic particles or something.

Why did I keep this? It has destroyed so many of my possessions, wakes me up at night, and is eating me out of house and home.

Because it needs you, hermitosis, and is therefore a reminder that, bleak, lonely, miserable and grim though your existence otherwise might be, there is at least one creature that depends on you.

I may post to this thread a few times :)

First one:

A witch's nose, just south of Salem, Oregon. Part of a kinda insane amusement park that I used to go to as a child, and to which I now take my niece and nephew. It mildly terrifies my boyfriend each time too.

Hmmm.....I guess a witch's nose is not commonly known, so it doesn't fit. I will have to find something better.

What the hell is that? Because that's what we city folk said when we saw it.

i immediately thought of this except i think i finally got rid of almost all the old hair whips, except maybe some colored ones i haven't seen for a while.
And i know why i keep this: it kept my hand captive at a very bad time for it to be so and i came up with a lot of skits and ideas for it as a puppet then, which i never got to do.
So here is this, both common and known:

Not sure if this fits the assignment:

...but I just realized that sometimes a group of thumbnails, like this collection of some of my December '07 photos, is sometimes pretty interesting.
