Wow, I'd never heard of Tapirs before -- I'm so glad I have Metachat's cute animal posts to enlighten me.* My second thought on looking at those pictures was "Isn't evolution the darndest thing?" More on tapirs for those of you who, like me, didn't know anything about these creatures and don't feel like Googling them. Thanks, essexjan, for teaching me something new today.

*I'm also ashamed to admit that I knew nothing of sugar gliders before I started reading Metachat in earnest.

Lassie, sugar gliders didn't exist until Metachat invented them.

Ah, that explains it, essexjan.

We had a competition, Lassie, to design a pet. The winning entry, which eventually became known as the SugarGlider™, is an amalgam of squirrel, possum, otter, chipmunk, bunny (of course), hamster, chinchilla and a pinch of kitten.

The winning recipe was given to our two best scientists, gaspode and ikkyu2, and they perfected the formula (there were a few, er, mutants along the way, but we try not to think about them, although they do tend to hang out in MetaTalk from time to time).

The formula was dried and sent out in sachets to anybody who requested them, along with the patented SugarGlider™ mould. The powdered glider only needed to be mixed with two pints of warm water, according to the instructions on the sachet, poured into the mould and left in a cool, dry place overnight. The following morning, after carefully removing the mould, the new SugarGlider™ should be ready to take up its role as cutest pet evah.

Unfortunately I left mine too long, they broke out of their moulds by themselves and I haven't seen them since.
