The Tata Nano was introduced to day. The USA had the Model T, and the Germans gave us the Beetle, now, India's Tata Motors has introduced a new "people's car," which at $2,500 will democratize car ownership. A debate has already begun as to whether or not this is a good thing.
According to BBC, it's half the cost of the next cheapest car, which I'm guessing is China's Chery.

What's the cheapest car available now in America and Europe?

Also, raising everyone in the world to a western middle class lifestyle (car, etc.) would be an ecological disaster/impossibility, which raises the question of how we should all live [more or less equally to be fair] in a world with so many people and limited resources.

It reminds me of the smartcar in size/design.
I thought about the environmental impact... but then, who the hell am I to say it's OK for people in one place to have a car priced in tune with average incomes, but not somewhere else.

But then... I know what my company pays the outsourced techs a year (and I know from talking to them that we pay above the norm for that sort of work). Based on that this still seems to be out of range for most people (moreso if they don't have access to financing). It's about on par with me going to buy a brand new fully loaded Prius with every option, which I certainly can't afford, despite being middle class by my city's income standards.

That is a fuckin' ugly car. It's like a Smart car with encephalitis.
Indian traffic is totally crazy but I don't know if it's necessarily better to have scores of shitty cars on the road, "for everyone." The autorickshaws are crazy loud and polluting, yes, but man I'd take them over navigating through millions of these.
I haven't been there in 10 years, but I remember the old Ambassador cabs in Bangalore were the coolest thing ever.

Small, reminiscent of the Yugo, the Ford Aspire, et al. But here in the US, it's a death trap whilst on the road with all the megamonster SUV's and pickup trucks. It'll never be as cute as the mini Cooper, though I do think it's cute in the pocket-car kind of way. I'd still get claustrophobia, anyway.
