Let's play guess the user Here's how it works. I pick a MetaFilter user, generate text using MarkovFilter, and you try to guess who it is. If you guess right, then you get to pick the next user. NO CHEATING BY USING SEARCH ENGINE ASSISTANCE.[More:]

First entry:

Pure gold (from the original Capt Kirk TV series, I really did not want a quick lunch during school hours) because their children, now aged around 8 or 9, are so good quality) are 34E as the flavour is very exposed with a built-in battery, so has to do, as Mutant says, with how interest is calculated and applied to the top, if you got the price down.

This place is in exactly the same behaviour who had heard of anyone in the polling booth than mark an 'x' for the outrage that resulted from my diet. From time to be more exact) a great place to start.

Sorbet to end the relationship, I am sure of a fine day with a handful (or one tablet, or a "Bill W Rode A Harley" baseball hat.

I believe there's only one 34E friend of Bill W in this parish. Do I even have to say it?

Second entry:

excuse me, i'm waiting for my man

i've been using netscape forever, even after they merged and such, part habit loyalty but mostly handled their own without need for comment.

"chesty smurf" heh

any message can be ground and used for other things often advised rushing to mind have more interest in wallets, it's always hard to catch back up in all the rest i guess the back and forth, there isn't really any blind "guessing", and no compensation, it's the whole of her comp on a daily basis and can't comprehend half her bookshelf any more, despite any options publicily stated.

i think it's subjective to how they treat them. mostly ps2 users, little problem from xbox (apparently it's hardier in construction: the way your mouth feels until the battery totally died, then i use to it. if they went the in shell scrambler. lots of posts-- yes, it's extremely open to tangentals because i am not color blind; no, this is the most amsuing thing here. seriously, i sincerely thank the people there were lots of clips and japanese links, like one matrix pingpong one, and i bet you find a link...

[Let's not necessarily restrict it to MetaChat users. Just try not to do something totally unguessable.]

Sorry, didn't mean to come up with a couple links all the crap music we have two small daughters at home who will go out in the registry. Again, SP2 might be too. Some of my former co-workers, who still smokes told me she didn't believe in Santa as I can tell you that for me, the stiffness predated the swelling.

Oh, and I'd like to guess Wendell for the last real one.
posted by richat 09 January | 19:36
gee, I hope that's not me. Because I really don't think Stern is funny, and if MarkovFilter twisted my words, I'm going to get an obnoxious lawyer and sue somebody's ass (I wonder if bruce would come out of retirement...)

I'm trying to think of whether there's any good way to make this into an App. Not sure how, though.

Just pick a user at random from one of the more prolific commenters. Give the player or players an extra generated comment for every wrong guess. Extra points for guessing correctly early.
posted by grouse 10 January | 12:40
Heh. That could work.

Some of the challenges that occur to me:

- How prolific is prolific enough?
- How recent is recent enough -- would it be cricket to throw Seth out there? Dave Winer? Kottke?
- What about socks? How do you automatically reconcile guesses about the right person with the wrong account?

But none of that is game-breaking. And having a Give Up button would make it easy enough to handle the frustrating edge-cases and allow for a small-comfort "I was RIGHT!" resolution.

Doing it as a single-player thing as you've described could be fun and pretty easy. Making it work for a group would require slightly more effort, but wouldn't be impossible.

This reminds me of an old script someone did via scraping -- Plutor, maybe? -- that presented a comment and five usernames and asked you to guess who made the comment. I've thought about trying to recreate that with db access and some refinements: grab a random comment and grab five usernames from the thread that it's in (including the actual user), erring on the side of prolific users. That, too, might be fun.

I need a paid vacation from my dayjob so I can get some frivilous mefi work done, I think.
posted by cortex 10 January | 13:21
Well you could have varying difficulty levels.
posted by grouse 10 January | 15:44
With 'prolific' and 'recent,' you could probably just come up with a formula, then wiggle the numbers to get the right size data set (I am not a programmer). If limiting it to, say, at least 500 comments total, and at least 10 in the last month, produces too small a set of users, then relax one of those standards a little, or vice versa.

Oh, and here's another one to guess:

I think might be something there, you know a limited palette of fresh (uncontaminated!) spinach, grown just a way you can even witness a young age, others may not feel good by applying limited resources where they were an Irish fiddler (many of whom have no reason it gives them a reason to speak up. And whether or not get useful answers, since she's still figuring out which station stop it's nearest. I start with some really good writing about Hunter S. Thompson's death.
