Free RSS readers! Newsgator has announced that FeedDemon (for the PC) and NetNewsWire (Mac) as well as their other RSS products are now all free! This is good.[More:]
NNW's 3.0.x "check for updates" feature didn't work for me, so I grabbed the brand new 3.1 straight from their site.
It all looks different, I am unsettled.

Is this kind of like when Opera announced that it was now free?

Kind of, but with Opera they were (and still are) very much in last place in popularity. NNW for the Mac is, I'd guess, the most popular RSS reader there is. They had a Lite version that was free and a paid version that added more features. As of now, it's free so the Lite one doesn't exist. As far as PCs go, I see FeedDemon mentioned everywhere, so I'd guess that that's also a really popular app.

I always use Safari's feed reader since I'm olde skool.

My favorite feed reader is the one that is on my Sony Ericsson phone, but I never use it now that I have the iPhone. I hope Apple makes a feed reader for the jesus phone.

They've made it all free so they have a larger pool of data to mine to sell to advertisers. Their PR people seem to have spun this rather well.

I used to use Safari's feed reader, but it can't manage well the amount of feeds I subscribe to now. The iPhone SDK will almost certainly be announced next week, so if Apple don't make one, someone else is bound to.

I hadn't thought about the advertising angle.

Um, I must be old skool too - is this different from Google Reader?

Google reader is a web-based app whereas these are downloadable, installable applications.

LOL : newsgator is blocked by my firewall.

Which is weird, because ...
1) I control that firewall.
2) I only ban sites if they piss me off.
3) I can't remember why newsgator pissed me off.

Ahhh. Figured it out. Gator.com pissed me off, but the string used to block them "gator.com" also managed to pick up newsgator.com
