As a former waitress, it really interests me that few things inspire really contentious web discussions like tipping. I didn't even read the comments because you can see where it's headed.
I've always said this. A tip is a fee for service, not a compliment or a vote. If you're unhappy, leave the barest minimum and TALK TO THE MANAGER. Too often people think the bad/absent tip is a great strategy to get their voice heard. But it really has no lasting effect. In other words, passive-agressive is a good word for it - it's not assertive.
It has a lasting effect, the customer gets to keep their money. I think this provides more motivation for the kind of customer who would leave no tip than any lasting improvement in service.
I hate the tipping system. But it's not going away, and it's not my job to make it go away.
