People piss me off Pet mistreatment anger filter[More:]This is something of a record for me, posting twice in one day, but I need some affirmation and I naturally look here for it, at least on this subject. Rant follows.

WHO THE FUCK WOULD LEAVE A LIVE HAMSTER NEXT TO THE GARBAGE IN OUR APARTMENT BUILDING WITH A SIGN THAT SAYS "FREE HAMSTER. IF NOT TAKEN, WILL TAKE TO PETCO"? I'm guessing some kid got a hamster for Christmas (proving yet again why pets as gifts are such a fucking bad idea), and now there's some reason it can't stay, but really, you have to leave it shivering in its cage down by the garbage? You couldn't hold onto it for a day, put up posters asking if anyone in the building wants it, and then give it away? Really?

Also, IF YOU AND YOUR GIRLFRIEND ARE BREAKING UP, PLEASE DON'T ABANDON YOUR KITTY IN YOUR APARTMENT FOR WEEKS ON END BECAUSE NEITHER OF YOU CAN STAND TO BE IN THE APARTMENT. Just don't.

Gah.
Oh the poor little hamster. And the cat. People are arseholes sometimes.

People are bad. People are constantly leaving their dogs tied up outside of stores in NYC. On the way into the bodega this morning, the dog tethered to the fire hydrant outside was standing in the street, trying to pull and reach for a piece of chicken that was on the ground a few feet beyond his reach. There is so much opportunity for danger in a big city, WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE YOUR PET OUTSIDE UNATTENDED???

I don't know what to do, about either situation. I don't want a hamster, or a cat. My puppy will worry either one clear out of its mind. I've already offered to let the kitty stay temporarily while these two so-called adults work their shit out, but I can't subject either them or my pup to the drama on a permanent basis.

Call your local animal shelter or ASPCA chapter.

I could be wrong but I think it unlikely that the ASPCA is going to come out for an abandoned hamster.

Aaargh, this stuff pisses me off no end. People neglecting their animals or kids is one of the few things I ever feel like I could get violent over. Grr.

You aren't in NC are you? We'd take a poor abandoned hamster.

(If it's cold someone really needs to rescue it pronto. Poor thing. Take it to a vet or something-they would be able to find a home for it.)

The ASPCA may not come out to you, but they could (likely) tell you over the phone what your options are, if there are interest groups who deal with that kind of thing. (e.g. like the American Gerbil Society, who, if it were a gerbil, could provide you with a contact of a local breeder, who may actually want to come by and pick it up.)

bunnyfire, that's really sweet, thank you. Unfortunately, there's one more consonant in my geographical location -- it's NYC.

not_on_display, I checked with my girlfriend, and she's also of the opinion that a call to the SPCA might be of use. The hamster's warm and dry right now, but if it's still there tomorrow morning, I'll call. Thank you.

Report it to the authorities as animal cruelty.

Put the hamster in the apartment with the cat - then it'll have something to eat.

Hey, around here, they have drivers who just pick up animals and bring them in -- there's no expert who assesses them first. Last week, they brought in a rattlesnake a tenant had left behind when moving. (Luckily nobody was bit, as the snake was a little logy.)
