Well, let's just dump 'mischief' once and for all. [More:] New username as yet undetermined. I have served this persona for seven years starting on Plastic in 2001, migrating over to MetaFilter that summer, and settling in on MetaChat two years ago. Time to retire the little bastard, eh?
But, but...it's so YOU. Fair enough though. I'm still enamored with my user name, so...I can't quite relate.

Will there be a contest to pick the new username?

I vote for using your real name. :)

How about mischievous? You know, 'cos then you wouldn't be mischief incarnate, but you could still retain some of the original sense of things.

My only other real suggestion is "Precious Lilywhite". Or "Vince". Okay, that's all I got.

Wait, is changing your username even an option? At metafilter/metachat/flickr?
posted by rainbaby 04 January | 15:26
Wait, I know you can change it at will on flickr.

Anyway. . .good luck with the re-branding. I may consider it myself.

What would be the opposite of mischief? Compliance? I vote for Johnny Compliance.

But it's a good name.

I've always thought dastardly would be a good username. If you want it, you can have it.

"Only assholes [have to] do this." Exactly, I drove off someone for whom my username had become a trigger stimulus. The effort of registering a new name is minor compared to this board losing someone who contributes much more than I. Those who know me will know me.

Hmm. Due respect, and unsolicited opinion: If that's the issue, then a name change means little without a concurrent behavior change. Seems like you could get more out of continuing to use your current name and apologizing to whomever, plus making an effort to correct whatever behavior was problematic. I don't really see how changing your username fixes what you've just alluded to. Just be a good guy, regardless of your name.

That's the plan, mudpuppie. A lot of baggage from different times and places from here also gets shed.

Yeah, I hear you. Best of luck.

With respect, Lentrohamsanin, I don't know if that's always the case. I've been recently considering a username change myself, mainly because my current user ID no longer really reflects what I feel. Um, it's complicated, but I'm honestly not doing it to hide or disassociate from my current online persona.

Further clarity can be gained by checking the explanation in my MeFi profile. I feel like I've come pretty far from where I was when I took on that handle. To wit: An x really, REALLY disliked the implications of the 'lone' bit, if that makes sense. The mister doesn't seem to mind, at least not to my face, but, er... oh, fuck it.

The bigger reason I've not done this yet is that it represents a massive hassle on my part.

I feel that (at least in my case) it's more the internet equivalent of removing/reworking the product of a drunken ill-conceived tattoo session.

I think Lentrohamsanin (formerly _________) was being ironic, since he also used to be known by a different username.
posted by mudpuppie 04 January | 18:03
Do you want a like name like roguery or gambol, or a different name altogether?

Shame you can't bequeath it. It's a good name.

Yep, I'm all subtle and whatnot.

How about Mr. Chief?

About the only time I regret using my real name is when y'all do the funny things with usernames. It doesn't fit in with most of the reindeer bunny games. *sniff*

That said, I like Mr. Chief.
