What are your New Year's Eve plans? [More:]
I'm having a friend over for an early dinner today. It's a celebration day for her, she's ten years sober today. I can't imagine stopping drinking on New Year's Eve, but I suppose when you've had enough, you've had enough. I have a gift for her, a slow-cooker, because she's always said she must get one whenever I've served up a slow-cooker dinner.

Today I'm making chicken caesar salad to start, followed by sirloin steak and roast winter vegetables, ending up with hot roast pineapple and Greek yoghurt. Something healthy, to counteract the carb and sugar fest of the last week. I feel like Jabba the Hutt. Or should that be Janna the Butt.

This evening it's an AA dance, which is usually a lot of fun. It finishes at 11 (due to restrictions on the use of the hall) but up the road is the local Alkathon, where the party continues. The New Year will be played in on the bagpipes by a Scottish friend, in full costume, kilt, skein dhu, etc..

At 12.30 there's a candlelight meeting, which is usually pretty moving, being the first AA meeting of the New Year.

Tomorrow lie-in, if I can. Then football on TV, laundry to do, phone calls to make, kitchen cupboard to tidy, although that's probably something to be left for another day.
This is the first year I'm not supposed to be planning anything (it's my birthday, so I usually host some type of event), but in luring me up there, the Milwaukee contingent of friends promised to take charge.

So, I do not know what the future will bring. Except that I have requested a bottle of Red Line. So, as tradition goes.. I'll be wanting to play a game of Rummy at 5am and will end up lying awake in bed (while everyone else is passed out) thinking about how awesome it would be to be playing cards.

Tomorrow, I am excited about getting to see NHL hockey out-of-doors and then going to the Illini side of the family for a Rose Bowl extravaganza.

I am working right now, getting out at 7ish. Going home, getting changed, and then going to a party with a gaggle of friends.
A guy I've always gotten all goofy around asked if he could join me for the party, so I'm all "holy crud!" about it.

I made a new skirt. It's a very, very high-waisted 50s pencil style, with a pleated panel in the back in place of a slit. I've seen vintage patterns with the same thing, and love it.

Tomorrow I'm going to watch the Ice Bowl at the corner bar with a friend to cheer on my Sabres!

I'm gonna stare at the bunnyhead all day long. IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!

Just kidding. I'm doing some errands (drop off charity donations, get rent at the bank), then I'm going to a baby play group party at my church to help corral little ones, then Stynx and I are going to a nice restaurant for one of those prix-fix nice dinner things. Yay! Happy New Year!

i'm playing a gig at a dry party on an indian reservation about 50 miles south of here.

Staying in as usual, possibly having a mini film fest tonight or tomorrow. We may shoot off a few fireworks at midnight, if we're still awake. Tomorrow I'm working on a surprise for Lipstick Thespian, who I'm meeting on Wednesday afternoon!

We'll stay in. It's amateur night.

Heh.

Today I'm trying out my new camera, and then DJ-ing First Night here in Portsmouth for a while early on.

Tomorrow I finish my surprise for Beeps, whom I'm meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Working now, but get out at three.

Too late for dinner reservations, so the Husband is meeting me for a nice lunch.

When I leave work, I will go to the gym. Then the grocery for Avocados and Tomatos and lettuce. Then the Drugstore for cheap champagne.

Then home for an early celebration with the Husband.

Tomorrow (or maybe tonight) purge the kitchen of all carbs and alcohol. We're going Atkins hardcore. Boil some eggs, etc. Plus the no drinking and smoking and covering fifty mies on foot in January (me, not him). I am so burt that I'm looking forward to it.

Happy BD pokermonk!

Out for dinner, as usual. Home by 11ish, sober. Hang out for a couple of hours and then down to Bowery Ballroom for the 2am Les Savy Fav show.

Happy bday pokermonk!

Today, I’m at work eating a box of chocolates I purchased at 75% off. Tonight, I will go to bed early. Tomorrow, I will be at work, regretting today’s conspicuous consumption very very much.

Probably staying home as we don't have plans and just got back from a week in California and are sort of worn out. It's nice to be home, however crumbly it is.
posted by octothorpe 31 December | 11:59
I'm staying home because I don't feel like getting nailed by a checkpoint. Plus, I don't have anywhere to go.
posted by sperose 31 December | 12:07
I will be at work until at least 11:30 tonight. I can usually get home within 15 - 20 minutes*, which leaves enough time to have a little snack before we crack the champagne (oh, all right, California sparkling wine) and watch the fireworks at the Space Needle on the TV. Wheee!

*It's close enough to midnight that I rarely see anyone else on the drive home. I avoid the main drag through the U District, just in case there are any straggling amatuers on the road.

I'm planning on having a fight with the g/f, and then going to a party with friends where I'll moan for three hours before falling asleep.

Yay - funtime for seanyboy.
posted by seanyboy 31 December | 12:24
Same as last year. We'll start off with a quiet evening at the Argonaut, a local watering hole (and site of a meetup a while back). They'll have some party favors out on the table, and free champagne at midnight, but it's generally a low-key place--10, maybe 20, people, board games, decent food and beer, 6 blocks from home, so we can walk, or take a quick cab ride if we're feeling really indulgent.

Tomorrow is our annual New Years Day soul-food brunch. We've already made the black-eyed peas and collard greens, and have done as much prep as possible for the corn bread, macaroni and cheese, and peach cobbler. We'll have mimosas and bloody marys and beer and home-made wine galore, of course. If any of you will be in the area, drop me a line, and you'll get an invitation--there will be several MeFites in attendance.

I'm putting in a full day at work today, and will do the same Wednesday--the beginning of the year is always a busy time at my job.

I'm celebrating with theatre, specifically The Masque of the Red Death at BAC. I'm about to head over there now, and I'm worried that I'm overdressed though I may well be underdressed.

I'm going down to my neighborhood zendo to meditate for three hours, and then we will have a Rohatsu ceremony, the Buddhist ceremony of atonement, which is about acknowledging all "evil karma" or "unskillful behavior" of the past year, and vowing to try to do better next year. Also, a lot of bowing is involved in this ceremony, so I'll have to remember not to have a big dinner.

We're staying in .. we thought about heading downtown and hitting a few clubs (we'd take the baby monitor with us of course!) but instead we're hanging out here with Baby Jack, watching movies and eating. I went to the store this morning and bought lots of snacky stuff like chips, dips, fruit, cheese, stuff like that. It's unlikely that either one of us will be awake at midnight. Pathetic I know, but it's also exactly where I want to be and what I want to be doing.
posted by Kangaroo 31 December | 13:16
^ I misread that as bowling, and thought - wow you can meditate at a bowling alley??

Staying in as usual. We got the Simpsons Movie and something else I can't remember on netflix, beers in the fridge, food, and I cleaned the litterbox today. All set.

rainbaby go get 'em with Atkins. I was just kiddin' with that ecard I sent.

We're staying home, and having American food!

A two-day American feast... Fried chicken, greens, mashed potatoes, cornbread and brownies tonight. Tomorrow, chili, mixed green salad, and cherry pie.

Except for the salad, none of these things are foods you find here. Maybe mashed potatoes... maybe. We make it, of course, but I don't think I've ever seen it in a restaurant. We should be making black-eyed peas, too, but it's too much, especially since we'll have beans in the chili tomorrow.

Anyway, the wine (me) is Greek, and the vodka (him) is Russian. So non-American beverages. I'll miss the gypsy music from Thessaloniki in the market, and dropping by our old favorite restaurant, but don't mind at all staying home other than that. Not mad about New Year's eve parties. Not going is not usually an option, though, and may not be an option again for a few years, so I'm going to savor it.

I'm going to have a pointless, pissy argument on the Interwebs.

Naw. Just kidding. I think that, like BOP, I shall have an impeccably boring Introverted New Years, featuring a bottle or two of decent beer, a book, and a Galaxie 500 cd.

oh, wait! I totally lied. Greens are definitely a Greek dish as well as (mostly southern?) USian. I don't want that mistake on my record. :)

Making biscotti.

My daughter has to leave in the wee hours of the am to make it to the Charlotte airport to go back to Texas...so no big plans.

Going to a party with the girl's friends, where her ex will be in attendance. Everyone is underage, so in theory, there's no booze, which is a good thing. I'll probably call it an early night.

I have to miss out on the my ritual Twilight Zone marathon with my best friend 'cause of some relationship-related shenanigans that our friend group is dealing with, which is unfortunate.

I'm working all day, or until the CEO goes home, or until he declares and early closure. Whichever comes first.

Then Mr. Current and I are meeting up with his brother's family and we are all going sledding at the house of some people I don't know. We have been instructed to bring an appetizer, and we have fresh crab dip in the refrigerator.

The mister and I are staying home. We were going out to go to lunch with a friend and book shopping but I have a headache and we're skipping that. The mister made a run to the local Safeway and brought home a bunch of finger-food type stuff and we'll have that tonight for dinner. There will be a midnight toast (with wine) to ring in the new year. The rest of the afternoon and evening will probably be filled with napping and playing WoW.

The Fella has a brutal cold and
I can feel it creeping up on me, so we're staying in tonight with plenty of juice, a big pot of soup, and a stack of DVDs.

Oh, and I'm making caramel corn! Mmmm.

Tomorrow, if we're well enough, we're heading out to a New Year's Day brunch at a friends, so we'll do our celebrating then.

We are also staying in, we both have lingering colds and will probably watch the Doctor Who xmas special. There will also probably be fireworks visible from our living room window, with no effort on our part. I've already started on the sauv blanc.

Happy Birthday, pokermonk!

We're going to a friend's house. They've been hosting New Years' parties for almost 20 years, and I've been attending off and on over the years. In years past, it was the usual drunk fest - we'd leave our keys in a dish by the door and end up sleeping on the floor as drunken lumps. But as marriages and children began arriving, it's toned down over time. Two years ago a couple of their friends brought guitars; we had such a great time. So tonight, Mr. V feeling up to it and all, we're looking forward to another fun time.

I FUCKING HATE NEW YEAR'S EVE!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS ONE OF THE THREE DAYS OUT OF THE YEAR I WOULD KILL MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!

The flu turned into a sinus infection and my head feels clogged with cement. Some crackhead who I thought was a parking attendant demanded that I smile........I told him to look in the mirror if he wanted one. Did my usual and went to Sweeney Todd--went to a nearby restaurant beforehand where I was seated in the bar even though tables were free in the dining area the whole time I was there. Was ignored for fifteen minutes before my order was taken, then had appetizer and entree brought out at the same time.

Party at my parents tomorrow; I don't want to go but I'm worried about my father.

I would much rather be somewhere quiet with someone I know I can trust.

Got to Heathrow by 11am GMT. Our flight from London landed at 5pm EST. Bus from Logan airport arrived in Lebanon, NH at 9:30pm. Drive home took 45 mins. Took a few minutes to warm the house up, turn on the hot water and water pump, etc. Nearly fell asleep before midnight, but stayed up long enough to have a glass of scotch and a snog with turtlegirl. Fast asleep by 12:10. Missing England and the Brits we saw already.

I'm not much of a NYE person even when I am not not traveling internationally.
