I CAN HAZ A KITTEH? [More:] So I've been lobbying for a kitty in the house to complement our two doggies. Mrs. Doohickie has steadfastly refused to entertain the idea. I wanted one for my birthday; no dice. Christmas; nope. Then quite unexpectedly while we were riding in the car today, she started discussing the logistics of where we would put a litter box and how we would keep our beagle out of it and that kind of stuff. Not that we're going to get a kitty tomorrow or anything, but.... at least she's thinking along the right lines.

Anyone who has experience with beagles and cats and can vouch for their mutual compatibility would be helpful.

If you really want to go nuts, check the available cats at the local adoption center (the South West Adoption Center is the one closest to us). Which one should we adopt?

I'll let you know when I finally get Mrs. Doohickie to crumble completely and we get a kitteh. Wish me luck.
Those are some beautiful kitties! If it were me, I'd adopt Porsche or Maserati (or however they spelled it). Longhaired torties remind me of my girl Evie who passed away in July '06.

Or maybe Atlanta.

But they are all gorgeous. You need to go meet them and find a kitty whose personality is a good match for your household.

I like Sandi Claws. However, the thing to do is go to the shelter and see which one you like best in person. I generally find myself liking the most rotten and ornery kittens/cats when I'm getting a new cat.

I have also (in the past) found myself asking the shelter which cats they've had the longest. I ended up with Monkey based on a combination of those things (she was actually the first cat I saw when I walked in to the shelter. I opened her cage and petted her then when I went to close the cage she bit me and I thought, "oh that's so cute. she wants me to keep petting her." Then I walked around looking at all the other cats and while that was going on she was hanging on the inside of her cage (all four paws hanging there by claws) yowling at me. I asked the lady which cats had been there the longest and she pointed at Monkey and said, "oh yeah, that one is only $50 cause she's been here more than a year."

Monkey is totally effing psychotic. (I love her, though.) I've had her for five years now.

I kind of like Bonita:

She's 18 months old and is already in a foster home with dogs which gives her a leg up on some of the little kittens.

I vote orange tabby, but they'll get my vote any day. I love orange tabbies. Good luck!

It's really, really important to not have the cat litter box anywhere the dogs can find it. Because dogs eat cat poop. They really do. They love it. If you don't believe me, Google 'dogs eat cat poop' and you'll see what I mean. I've seen it with my sister's dogs too. Enjoy your breakfast.

Jan- We've had cats and dogs previously, so we know of that little habit dogs have. That was part of our discussion.

The problem is this. My Mrs. started looking on the net and apparently there is ample anecdotal evidence that beagles and cats just don't get on well together. We didn't get the beagle until after our last cat died.

I personally think that it won't be a problem but Mrs. Doohickie is worried it just won't work out.
