Yemen. A rather pretty slide show over at the nytimes site.
Very enjoyable. I particularly liked the conical hats. For cooling purposes.

That is lovely. I just got back from Dubai and Yemen is like the poor stepchild of the UEA according to people there that I talked to. Of course these are people who live in an Arabian Disneyland so I'm not sure what their frame of reference was, but it was fascinating to see these photos.

Those hats are fantastic, but they only work because black is the new black.

Shibam is fantastic and I hope I can go there someday. It's really odd the way it had to remain within those walls. (By the way, it's under active restoration. The rubble pile you can see on the lower left has almost all been removed in later photos.) I'm not sure what the legal/cultural constraints were that made that happen. The population is only 7000.
