Pet Names. This is about names for the creatures in your life. [More:]

All the pets I've had in my life have earned extended names except one. They got their given name, but their extended name is something they earn through living. My first cat was Eclipse Molebane since she was quite a hunter, and would dig up moles and gophers. My first two dogs were Sundance Greatheart, and Moondog Thundercloud. Sundance because of his amazing love for everyone and for life, and Moondog because of his ability as a protector that belied his sweet nature: he lived up to this when he scared off some people that broke into my house when he was fatally ill, and even wearing the plastic cone. Pesto, my current cat, is Pestocaticvs Gimpicvs Caesar for his surgery modified leg, and his ability to rule like a Roman Emperor. Saffron has earned Saffron Snowqueen for her love of snow. Sad thing is I still don't have an extended name for Silver. Do you have extended names for your pets?
Actually, Saffron's whole name is "Saffron Snowqueen, the Saffron Queen". I think my extended names are like titles that were given to knights in days of lore, or yore, or ummm, you know, a long time ago.

Well, you've already heard about Chicken-Leg Al and Little Izzy Crosseyes (and the western saloon for cats that I'm apparently operating).

One of my cats is Oreo, because he is white and the other two are black. He gets called Cookie Cat, Cooks, Sugar Cookie, and Twinkie. And Great Fuzzy Master, because he's very demanding.

Another cat, Banjo, is The Mighty Panther of Love. I also have Her Royal Majesty The Princess Bijou.

Boyfriend has a dog named Mickey. I've decided that his rap dog name is M'K. (mih-KAY) His first cd will be out shortly. Appearing on his next cd will be his newly adopted sister, Scarlett, whose rap dog name is "Miss Scar."

My dog's name is Fado, he is a Portuguese Water Dog, and his extended name for the breeder's geneology is Fado Soulsinger Do Gato.

However, he had earned the following names by the time he had grown to a dog:

Fado-Fado, The Pinsk, Pinsky, Pinskaroo, Fadinks, The Sweet One, Fadiado, Fademus, Superdog, and Fadelicious.

All or any of which, including his real name of Fado, I was wont to call him at any given time.

Actually, Silver is also known as "Secret Agent Silver" for his James Bond Characteristics. Suave, debonair, and obstinate. He's also a total sweetheart. I still don't think he's earned his total extended name yet however.

Our late cat, Martin, was also known as Marty, Seņor Hairball (or just Seņor), and Bitey Orange Death. Lucy is sometimes LuLu or Miss Dog.

I used to have a rat whose name was The Baron. At the moment, we have:
* Sugar Gliders - Paxton Pullman and Maya Ginger Skywalker; and their children Bits and Snacks Skywalker. The other two children don't have full names yet.
* Hedgehog - Mango Pricklebottom
* Bunny - Slipper Steve Luckyfoot

Damn elizard, sounds like a mob joint you're running there!

My cat is named Oscar after Oscar the Grouch, because when I was thinking up a name for him, he kept sitting in the trash can. He hasn't earned an extended name yet, after a year an a half, except Pain-in-the-Ass, because he's a holy terror. I'm considering Oscar Carpet Wrecker the Pet Deposit Eliminator. Anyone got any tips on how to train a cat?

My former dog (lost in the divorce) was named Gus, extended names being Gustavus Bustavus, Bus Dog, and Guster. Just terms of affection, not really due to any particular traits of his, except being cute enough to earn terms of affection.

Coya's got nothing on your kiddos, eekacat. There for a little bit, she was Coya Marie (a long-running family in-joke) but that didn't last. We called her monkey-butt for a bit, but then the SO started calling her Booger-butt, which devlolved to boogie-butt, and now the only extended name she has it Coya-boog. It works for us, but isn't nearly as monumental or name-sakey as your cats.

Her two-year adoption anniversary is coming up on Monday, though, so hopefully we have a lot of time to come up with other things.

Bailey, aka Bailey Fatbird, or Big Belly Bailey

Lucy, aka Little Tummygirl or Little Lovely Lucy

My dog is named Masha after the Chekov character that always wears black. She has my husbands first name for a middle name, and the cat, Slade, named after Chris Slade the former UVA and NFL linebacker, has my middle name for a middle name. So the male cat is Sladie Louise Last Name and the female dog is Masha male first name Last Name. Also Sladie Pie and Masha Pants. Or just Pants and Pie. Also Doggum P. Doggums and You Fat Piece of S___t (for the cat.)

ufez, Coya is aweseome! And you did have other names, quoting from flickr:

Coya Coya the Bed Destroyah or Coyaanisqatsi

As you point out, these names are evolutionary and grow with the creature. Rainbaby points this out as well.

We used to have a cat named Twitters. Nervous little thing. I promise you it was before the Twitter website thingee!

My most recent cat (now deceased) was named Abby when she joined the household, but she was re-christened "The Nake," thanks to my then-two-year-old nephew, who couldn't pronounce his s's, who was fascinated with snakes, and who immediately recognized her resemblance to his favorite reptiles (yelling "Issa nake! ISSA NAKE!!" upon first meeting her). She was long, lean, sinuous, dangerous, and given to biting with one swift strike of the teeth, rather than by the more conventional means of grabbing first with paws and then chomping down. So she was Abby the Nake for the sixteen years she lived with me, and strange and interesting years they were, with many the bite-scar on my forearms to show for them.

Oliver was the Bug-eyed Freak when he was a kitten for obvious reasons. It's been shortened to Bug and Bub has come out of that. He's now known as The Prince of Darkness for reasons best left unsaid. Just worship him and we'll all be alright. I hope.

Mingo is Mingo the Magnificent Monster because he's just so damned huge.

Abigail, Fanty and Kaylee all have nicknames but have yet to earn extended names.

Aw, thanks, eekster. I'm rather partial to her myself. However both of those names came around when she was still recovering from the heartworms and on bedrest most of the day. Orvis tough-chew beds? She scoffed at you!

And to be fair, the Coyaanisqatsi, which I found brilliant, was coined by a roommate at the time.

Our cat George (well, he spelled it JORJ, but what do you expect, he's a cat!) let it be known that he was Just George. Or more properly, Just JORJ.

LOL @ Bitey Orange Death and Pet Deposit Eliminator!

Years ago we named the neighbor's dog No Pets as he went scooting by our back door, after our landlord telling us we couldn't have any pets.

Bungee is our border collie/shepherd mix who was a rescue. Some asshole threw her off a bridge when she was 4 months old & she was brought into the vet where my partner worked at the time. We also call her Mousedog because her nose is pointy and has thick black whiskers.

In our family, the extended name is usually based on some feature...

So there is:
Lucky Chin Beard
Edison Cold Paw
Juneau Pale Nose
Cider Long Hair

and there was
Rusty Bent Paw

chewatadistance, that's awesome that you named your pooch to relate her history. Definitely she's bounced back. Saffron was a rescue dog from the Boulder Valley Humane Society, and was a stray at 3 months old. I can't imagine anyone giving her up because she is so sweet and loving, and so quick to learn and willing to please. There are a lot of assholes in this world, but it's still hard for me to imagine.

We've got more of a reductivist naming thing going on. Isabel is better known as Bella, and Tiberius is Boose (like "moose").

My first dog's original owners (friends of the family who were going to Australia and didn't want to put her in quarantine) named her Daisy because one of the spots on her back looked like a flower a little kid might draw. My brother named his rescued Dalmatian bitch Buzz Aldrin Jr. II....I called her Buzzard, which pissed him off no end. My black Lab bitch was Lennon (registered name Boldcrest Norwegian Wood), but I also called her Osita, Brat, Stinky and Shitmouth (the first time we took her to the stable we didn't realize she'd picked up a ball of manure until she brought it into the car). Chupahija's dogs have been Billy (Lab Rhodesian Ridgeback mix) for some Michael Crawford character and Scribble (dark brindle Greyhound bitch ), who I also call Crockydog and Fishbreath. If I ever have a chocolate Lab, s/he will be Clift for Monty; if I have a male Akita or German Shepherd, he will be Archie(Y) for Cary Grant and the cockroach. A black cat would be either Irena for the panther woman in Cat People or Buttercup because that's what I thought the character from HMS Pinafore was when my godmother would sing to me.

My cat was until recently only called Henry1, Lord launch lunch and the kissy noise we make to get his attention. Now he is also known as flat cat. (I blame Wendell)

My collie dog Theo's full name is Theophilus Q. Dogge, because he is dignified. Django, also known as Djangs, also known as the Destroyer of Furniture, doesn't have a full name because he is undignified and foolish, although he sometimes is called Holy Shit Goddamn Jesus Christ Almighty That Fucking Dog. Actually, when he hears me yell Jesus Christ! he immediately scoots under my bed and won't come out until the danger is past - it's his party trick.

I used to have a cat named Andy Warhol because we got him at the Baltimore shelter the day Andy Warhol died. He was completely batshit insane, lived with me all over the east coast for 16 years and I so wish I still had a receipt I got from the East Village Animal Hospital that said, Treated Andy Warhol for Flea Infestation, $60.

Sweet Home Alabama is our pound puppy, now four years old. When we got back in the car after adopting her, that was the song on the radio when we turned the car on. She's Ally, Puppie, Buddy, and Baby Girl all in one.

For the most part, all of ours have short names, though Teddy is also known as FatBoy (he weighs 16 pounds, and his belly sways when he runs). Charlie is also known as SkittyKitty since he's the most nervous, neurotic cat I've ever known.
My aunt, who has had dozens of animals over the years on her farm, had one cat whose extended name was Pretty Boy Floyd the Beast.
