Contra 4 for Nintendo DS [More:]

This is a REAL Contra game that feels just like Contra for NES or Contra III for SNES. First new game in the series since the SNES game that does not miss the mark.

It uses both screens which can be irritating (you can be shot by something on the top screen so you have to watch both) until you get really used to it and if you have not played anything like this recently you can expect to have trouble finishing the first level until you get back into practice. Definitely harder than any of the newer games I have played lately but not much harder than the original Contra.

It is going to be sucking some of my gaming time away from WoW (yeah some of my LotRO guildies finally talked me into trying it) and the other new games I have will likely be ignored for a bit. I doubt I will clear this one for a while as the difficulty is enough to make you want the Konami code (I haven't looked for cheats, the damn thing might even work) for 30 lives.

Despite not spending much time on them yet, I can also recommend Bleach: The Blade of Fate (fighter based on the Bleach anime) and Puzzle Quest, both for the DS as well.
As everyone at work is a bunch 'o geeks, we were talking handheld games... From what I've seen, I'd like to get a PSP, and that's based on the games alone. I've always been a fan of the Wipeout series and I see they're coming out with another chapter on it for the PSP. The dual screen of the DS is a really neat idea, but I'm not sure on the games for it - I'd buy a HH or a platform based on the amount of games for it, and the style of them (got a PS2 just cos at the time the XBox and the PS3 were waaay too much money). I haven't really looked into the DS though, which is an error on my part, I know. What made you choose the DS over another handheld (if there was one thing at the time)?

WoW. I cancelled my EQ2 account as I'm too burnt out on them, which I'm totally bummed about as I still really like the concept of MMO's. But really, I can't face another level grind without jumping off the balcony, so kudos to you for being able to do so. :)

Can't speak for weretable, but I chose the DS over another handheld largely because of the game library (especially considering the GBA backward-compatibility). At this point (i.e., after the death of the Dreamcast), Nintendo is the only hardware maker whose first-party games appeal to me (I mostly like puzzle games, multiplayer games, shmups and artsy experiments, and I'm not much into FPSs, RPGs, or driving sims).

Besides that, the UMD is a horrible goddamn storage device, even by Sony standards.

Most folks I know who went PSP ended up apathetic to it at best. I mean, it's a portable Playstation... it doesn't do anything particularly well on its own merit; it is what it is. Do you really want a portable Playstation (PS1)? I pondered that and answered no. I've never regretted that decision.

The DS owners who brought me into their cult and those that I have since recruited are in love with the thing. I can say fairly confidently that you might not think it's for you, but it is.

It's elegant, efficient, innovative and for being a weird, freak baby it is this amazing bridge between classic gaming and progressive design.

If you have ever considered that maybe we abandoned 2D-game design too soon... the DS is the system for you. There's a virtual golden age of gaming going on and too few people know about it. It's like Xanadu.

Since so much crap gets released to exploit the kiddies, I'd almost say you do need someone to grandfather you in though... tell you what you shouldn't miss, give you an idea of what's on the horizon, play wi-fi games with you and just be a general pillar of support as you learn the landscape. You can certainly get by on your own, but I don't know if it's the best way to experience the heights of the system.

I could go on all night. I won't. That's enough crazy, obsessed talk for now.

Oh, hush. 'Project Rub' was an excellent game.

My boyfriend already had a PSP. This is the perfect solution, we swap and play whichever games we feel like (both are modded - I highly recommend the R4DS if you're looking for a DS chip).

For me - the PSP has better graphics, and the DS is more innovative in its use of hardware. Overall I prefer the DS as a whole package.

Hmm. Lots to think about.. The 3D games on the PSP are tempting, and I'm not really into racing games unless there's a twist on them, which is why I like Wipeout and Burnout: Revenge. Time to look at available games I'd play per platform.
