In his project Dr. Strangelove Dr. Strangelove, Kristan Horton undertook the massive task of photographing every scene from Stanley Kubrick's film and recreating them in sculpture, using everyday household items. The resulting photographs are then displayed next to the original stills.
And no, I don't read BoingBoing. D'oh!

Pretty much had my interest at the Tabasco bottle in the Columbia logo. Although the concept is funny and interesting, the pictures really aren't that stunning, so I'm not sure if I'd get through the whole book once the novelty wore off. I'd skip right to Major Kong riding the bomb and call it a day.

Not to take a dump on it or detract from what it is, but yeah.

I'm not sure I can speak with any authority but I feel like there is a small resurgence of projects like this that are incredible in scope and concept but lacking in technical craft (this is far better than most)- an, in many ways, antiquated approach from the early postmodern era through its height when there was both an active questioning of (maybe even battle against) "craft" and a gap between the availability of quality creative technology and conceptual vision. (That might sound stupid to someone with greater historical perspective, but in the world of my head it is spot on criticism!)

Oh, I completely understand that I'm downing this meticulous project because it is not meticulous enough (crossing the threshold into the insane level of obsession) for my ideals. It's a jerk hole thing, but it's how I feel.
