Also tried to get to the updated Torchwood site @ BBC, and of course it's restricted to UK only (I'm in Canada). Anyone know a way around that?

I would have liked it more if they'd let someone else write it. Davies is a hack.

The episodes that Steven Moffat wrote were fucking amazing (Blink, etc).

There were a couple of memorable lines in it, but overall, I felt it was a little weak. The Doctor sure falls in love quickly.

Took me a bit longer than usual, too, Zack_Replica. Mostly because between the end of season three and last night, well, my usual downloadable channels had gone out of existance.

What a piece of crap that was. Apparently Davies has reached the point in his career where there's no one around to say "no" to him. It's going to take a whole season worth of Blink-caliber episodes to make up for that.

Finally saw it. Couple of plot holes big enough to drive a truck through (one being the shockwave generated by the ship, not to mention the blowback of the ship's drive, should've reduced Buck House and the surrounding environs to toothpicks and ash), and the GLARING continuity error of the old guy's head wound that switched sides during a talky bit. Looked like they flipped the film. If this is what the next season's going to be like (they're recycling villains already?), then I'm really looking forward to see how Torchwood holds up.
I'm not sure if that last bit's supposed to be irony or not... guess time will tell.

Is it wrong that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit? Although it did seem to be written to appeal to fangirls. Doctor ranting in front of things on fire, the sad way that couple died, love interest plus sad Rose music, etc.
Not looking forward to the new companion, though, that's for sure.

Just finished it and the verdict is meh. I was a little surprised that the Billy Zane guy lived. Also, what's up with all this pandering to the Eastenders demographic? It's getting a bit squalid.


Lastly, it was sad to see that Verity Lambert has died. I just saw her on the DVD features for The Web Planet, one of the William Hartnell episodes which she produced.

Well, I like it more each time I see it. Maybe that makes me a fangirl. ;-)

Sure, you get mixed feelings about Rickston, but then RTD carefully set him up as one of the few passengers who figured out what was going on beforehand, with the asteroid chunk and all. He's self-absorbed, but he's honest about it. There are lots of really nice character moments, even for minor characters like the newspaper vendor. And isn't Copper (Mr. Bucket!) one heckuva great guy, dancing away at the end?

I wouldn't say that I was wowed by Kylie's range, but she was solid and had the right notes for key scenes like "getting engaged" and jumping on the box to kiss the Doctor.

I like the special effects during the meteor strike a LOT. Very kinetic, Battlestar-Galactickey. The EMP was also a pretty good effect (with the great line "Bannakaffalatta -- CYBORG!").

The "Starship Titanic" (plus a barely noticeable "42") are nice, subtle Adams references.

Palmer is sinister yet sympathetic as the Captain and Middie Frame is really fantastic.

Picking on a film flip? Those are common, the production people do it sometimes just to keep fans on their toes nowadays. ;-) And the only thing I didn't like about the palace flyby was that they should have had the ship "ding" the top of the flagpole. That would have been ace.

OK, I'll throw you guys a bone. I wasn't thrilled with "Last of the Time Lords". But I sure as heck didn't get why some people were all WORST.EPISODE.EVAR ....

Ah, might as well go whole hog here. I'm looking forward to more Catherine Tate and Donna, who is unlikeably likeable. It's a really different angle for the companion (since 2005) and I hope it helps them move past the Rose/Martha Doctor-COmpanion quasi-couple approach, which is getting old.

It will help the quasi-couple thing, true... but then they show the hand holding in the season preview, so who knows. Maybe the doctor is cursed to roam space and time, having people fall in love with him everywhere he goes?

Although I will say, I liked her a lot more towards the end of the christmas special than I did in the begining. They managed to cram a lot of character development in that. So maybe she won't be quite so intolerable all season.

And last of the time lords... VOMIT IN MY FREAKING MOUTH! The fucking TINKERBELL ENDING? What the hell?? Someone needs to put a fucking leash on Davies. (although Capt Jack in chains was, um, not offensive to the eyes. But that face of boe thing made me, and the other eight people who were watching it at my house, groan out loud at the same time). And I'm not one of those Anti-Davies fans... I loved Gridlock and Army of Ghosts. I loved the whole Bad Wolf thing. But yeah, tinkerbell ending. WTF??

That is the current preferred villian of the year among my Doctor watching group... we all figure they've done Daleks, done Cybermen, now they almost HAVE to bring Darvos around. Moreso with only one Dalek left (in theory).

I wouldn't mind seeing the Sontarans again, although given the way things are going any return would probably be wrapped in some incredibly leaden messages about individuality and blahblahblah, instead of just letting us enjoy leather-suited, three-fingered, dome-headed clone fascists.

I think the Routans would be awesome. With a little tweaking, they could be Cthulu. In fact that's basically what they were in The Horror of Fang Rock.

The Ood weren't even enemies really. They were just empty vessels for mind control, kind of like the Zarbi.

Yes, and like the hosts from the most recent episode, who were androids and not really a hive mind, too.
Point being, hive minds, mind control, androids, it all means another episode with a blank-faced mob walking in unison changting "kill" or somesuch. Again.
