The Kennedy Honors Are Proof That.... [More:]

No matter your individual achievements, televised awards are meant to make them look and sound like absolute tripe when played in front of you. Witness this trainwreck:

Brian Wilson, honoree - we get Hootie and the Blowfish doing I Get Around and California Girls, with hideous atonal result. Ditto for Lyle Lovett's massacre of God Only Knows.

Steve Martin, honoree - we get Rockettes wannabees singing King Tut and then Martin Short popping out of a vaudevillians pants.

However, all was not lost:

Diana Ross - honoree - we got the AWESOME Yolanda Adams burning the house down with Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand.

But still...what's with the honoree's having to wear those ridiculous Mork From Ork suspender awards around their necks the whole time? It's like they all won the Zoom! Olympics or some shit.

Harrumph!
I thought the medals sorta looked like Gay Pride medallions. So it was somewhat odd to see W. and Laura that close to them.

I have to disagree on the overall effect, though. Hootie was all right enough. Lyle was kind of a low point, sadly - it sounded to me like his voice was spent. He is on tour right now, and maybe that's why. The choirboys doing "Love & Mercy" were pretty awesome. Watching Diana rouse Wilson into some stilted boogieing was nice. Very sweet, all told. The Leon Flieschman thing was interesting too, though I had never heard of him and now need to look up who he is and what went wrong with his hand.

Whoever sang right before Yolanda wasn't so good (the person who did I'm Comin' Up). It sounded like a great example of the kind of pop idol is voice is merely mediocre and who benefits from a lot of production in the studio - which was not available onstage.

It's nice to stumble on the Honors every year, and be reminded that our culture still has some good things to offer.

Brian Wilson's songs are so good that even Hootie cant ruin them entirely. If they were alive the Ramones would've been perfect.

How would you begin to repair a 130 year old ruin? || Bears repeating
