22 December 2007

the Boulder meetup was awesome! [More:]
I also linked the pics to the MeTa meetup thread with pb's new photo-link thingie, but I know there are bunnies who don't read MeTa.

we had so much fun last night, although I totally forgot to put together shoutouts (sorry!). koeselitz (yes you!! i have proof that you lurk here!!!) is supposed to go and tag them with everyone's screennames.

I took my D70 but I don't have a working flash, so that meant shooting strictly available light inside a dark bar. I did manage to salvage some. I had to do a bunch of post, tho, so you can probably tell where I tried hard to rescue a couple that were hopelessly soft/noisy.

Anyhow, handsome bunch, aren't they? :) We really do need more women at our meetups, tho.
I like the lighting in those shots. They look like they're stills from a European film.

thanks Z_R. This is one of the things I think Nikon does really well; they have somehow figured out algorithms for their sensors that mean digital noise at high ISOs looks more like real film grain than nasty pixellated crap.

er, and by that I mean: I can't take credit for the lighting; it's pretty standard dim / warm beer-house lighting. However, my camera really kicks ass even when I ask it to do things it technically shouldn't be capable of.

Damn, I missed that there was going to be a meetup, and then I would have missed it anyways since I had to work last night.

And, yeah, I found out the Nikon's digital ability to "push" process when I took wedding photos, of which a bunch of the candid shots were underexposed (partly due to my external flash death, and partly due to me being a moron and not adjusting my ISO setting.) Photoshop and Nikon to the rescue! Really good results with minimal grain, though color really suffered. I heart my Nikon.

oh, and for dim lighting, I've been impressed with the 18-200mm VR lens. It actually works!

Nice set!

thanks chuckdarwin!

eek, VR is very much out of my price range at the mo. I'll be lucky if I can afford to fix/replace the speedlight.

The 18-200mm lens was pricey, but I've been working so much damn overtime that I could afford it. I enjoy using it, but the 50mm lens is still my favorite.
