20 December 2007

I just had the most delicious pear. But it was the only pear we had. Now I miss it.
You had the pear dream again didn't you?

To live is to suffer.

Suffering is caused by desire.

The end of desire is the end of suffering.

Pears are really tasty.

But the thing with pears is that they have a five-minute window where they are either not too hard or not too mushy, and you have to eat them in that time. If you'd left the pear until today, it would have become overripe and tasteless.

1

Opusculum paedagogicum
The pears are not viols,
Nudes or bottles.
They resemble nothing else.

2

They are yellow forms
Composed of curves
Bulging toward the base.
They are touched red.

3

They are not flat surfaces
Having curved outlines.
They are round
Tapering toward the top.

4

In the way they are modelled
There are bits of blue.
A hard dry leaf hangs
From the stem.

5

The yellow glistens.
It glistens with various yellows,
Citrons, oranges and greens
Flowering over the skin.

6

The shadows of the pears
Are blobs on the green cloth.
The pears are not seen
As the observer wills.

thank you, mister wallace stevens

I seem to remember Eddie Izzard riffing on this in one of his routines...

i was given three different kinds of pears i had forgotten about for a day or so, so when i found them the red ones threatened to succumb to gravity. But no, i ate them quickly and they were so juicy i stood over the sink to make sure any drops i missed went to join drops everywhere.
i couldn't stop myself and proceeded to eat the two green ones.
The brown one lasted two days more.

i wish i had a wealth of pears to experiment with but i'd probably just eat them.
Or make a pie.
Or roast them with--

Did i mention how much cake i still have to get rid of?
Want some coffee with that?
