13 December 2007

Three-point status update [More:]
1. I talked to my sister on the phone this evening and she is delusional. She has been prescribed anti-psychotic drugs. But she is also being very manipulative. Patients are encouraged to do their own laundry, there's a washer and dryer,so a friend took her in some detergent. But my sister has given her dirty clothes to her neighbour when she visited and inveigled her into washing them. My sister is used to being waited on hand and foot and is a wizard at getting people to do things for her. I'll speak to the neighbour tomorrow and say that she must tell my sister that she will not do her laundry again.

2. I am going up to see my sister on 28 December, and will probably be returning home with her cat, Molly, who is being fed by the same neighbour. But the neighbour has her own life/family/job and it's not fair to expect her to look after Molly too (who has a litter box, so it's not just a question of putting food down for her). I'll bring Molly home with me, she can stay in my spare room for a few days and I'll introduce her to my girls and then, gradually, to the cat flap. She's used to being outside during the day so the outdoors will not be a new and scary place for her. Molly likes people so being on her own most of the day must be unpleasant for her.

3. I just had a 'heat and eat' Aloo Ki Sabzi from these people, which I bought in a pound shop the other week. It was absolutely delicious.
1. Headache.
2. This whole week has been a blur of everything but doing the things I really need to do, work-wise. Hopefully I'll be ultra productive tomorrow and over the holidays!
3. Time to leave office, but don't want to go out into the cold.

1. Nothing but fun planned for the rest of the month, but still anxious.
2. My loverboy's quest to find a job where I want to move is progressing slowly, he got his second reply. All fingers crossed. My hard deadline was the end of the year. He's doing it all for me, and I shouldn't push too hard.
3. Going to a free screening of Juno tonight. Popcorn sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Not a nutritionist, obviously.

1. Three years for the BF and me today! Yay!!
2. BF is working late, so no plans.
2. Eating Dove mint chocolate chip ice cream.

1. I posted a question on AskMe about dealing with high inflation and got some pretty useful responses - I'm off to the bank tomorrow morning to switch my current account denomination from lats to euros. It's sad, really: I was starting to really like this job and the people here, but I don't think I can deal with losing 25% of the value of my salary over two years, even if the currency isn't devalued, which is a distinct possibility.

It's a real shame: I LOVE my coworkers, my apartment is cool, my boss is great, and Riga's a fascinating place to live. But I shouldn't have to hide my money in foreign-denominated accounts and be paranoid about runs on the bank. This also means I have to go through the whole oh-please-please-please-hire-me-even-though-I'm-not-an-EU-citizen thing again; even getting this job involved four e-mails just to get a "yeah, we'll look at your application." Poland seems a lot more stable economically, is much better value for money, and just elected a more progressive government than we've got here in Latvia, and a number of my colleagues have worked there in the past, so that's sort of up there on the list.

This is the one thing I HATE about this job: so far, I've had to start over year after year, and I hate the prospect of abandoning all the cool people I've met here AGAIN, just like I had to do when I left Indonesia.

Sigh.

2. The housemate has house guests, two nice guys from his Bible camp days!

3. I made some uber-tasty Asian-inspired chili-lemongrass-basil chicken tonight.

1. Out of work
2. Need to call unemployment office.
3. Not exactly jumping for joy at the prospect of having to call the unemployment office.
4. Not depressed, in the sense of constant anger and sadness.
5. At the same time, I have no motivation at all.
6. That's more than three, isn't it? Oh, well.

"She has been prescribed anti-psychotic drugs."

Heavy stuff. Most come with serious side effects. People on anti-psychotics often need a great deal of support to remain medication compliant.

At 54, my brother has kidney problems, Type II diabetes, and the beginnings of liver problems, and is hugely susceptible to any infection that comes along, all driven by his psych meds. And he only takes a "medium" dose of his atypical anti-psychotic.

I feel for your sister, essexjan. And for you, at a remove you want to think is definable on your terms, but that is crossable by a cat in peril.

1. hot water was out this morning so I had to go to work stinky today (I didn't shower yesterday cos I called out, so I'm smelly and greasy and nasty-looking)
2. pips is making sloppy joes. hoorah!
3. I found Johnny Cash's novel at work today.

1. It's been raining/sleeting/snowing for something like six weeks now. My garage roof now has five distinct leaks in it and we can't really get it fixed until the spring. We have 97 boxes of books and other assorted belongings stacking in that garage.

2. The neighbors who live on the corner of the alleyway behind our house just stopped by to invite us to dinner on Saturday. They are a very nice retired couple who just moved back to the states after living in Germany for many years.

3. I'm flying to the bay area in California this time next week where it is not raining/sleeting/snowing.

1. I'm sorry to hear about your sister, EJ. But I'm glad that she's in a hospital and that she has medicine.
2. I did well in an important meeting today. I'm glad.
3. I'm catching a cold.

1. Left work at 2 because it was too cold in our lab.

2. Intended to work at home, instead watched Project Runway and played online bridge.

3. Now, instead of cleaning the apartment, I'm about to watch football and play online bridge.

Today has been kind of a waste. But also kind of awesome.

1. The fridge was stabilized (but still no ice/water) and one sink was put in...something needs to be done about the water pressure.

2.I have an allergy related sinus infection.

3. There's a memorial this weekend for my mother's friend who died and both my parents are coming. I was very bad and made an Oxfam donation for two cans of worms to commemorate her relationship with the asshole shrink who ruined her marriage.

EJ, if--as you have posted earlier--you neither like nor love your sister, I know full well that you are capable of cutting her out of your life. It is up to the neighbor to figure out for herself that she is being used and the cat is not your responsibility.

1. Played a stonking set last night w/Vo & friends; it was very uplifting.

2. Work is all weird at the moment. Worried that I'll be expected to be on the road a LOT in 08. That won't sit well with me or my family, so I'm trying to decide if I should start looking elsewhere now. I'm not going to miss out on being with the kids, and I'm not going to miss any gigs.

3. I am in the wrong place, doing the wrong thing... I feel that strongly, but I lack the capital and connections to do much about it. I just need to finish the album.

3. Will drink the wine. Yay.

Love you, ej; hang in there. Happy anniversary, brina! Mdonley, I know how you feel - the whole moving again, starting again, leaving people again sucks hard; {{{jason's planet}}}
