Man - I've gone back to this movie several times in my life and I just don't get why it's so beloved. I was entertained and it was worth watching, but I didn't think it was that special. But so mnay people who's opinion I respect (including you BoPo) rave about it. I had a friend who demanded that i watch it again earlier this year and it still didn't grab me.
BoPo - is there anything in particular that makes you dig it so much - or it just one of that movies that grabs you as a whole?
It's the film as a whole- it has an incredible sense of melancholy. The characters are like cowboys in a western, where their way of life is coming to an end, and they're adrift, knowing that the world will soon have no place for them anymore.
Everybody in this movie is trying to escape something, but no matter how fast they drive, they can't do it. As The Driver says, "You can never go fast enough."
It's been a long time since I watched it, actually, but now I want to wait and see the Criterion disc.
