What's your favorite comfort food? [More:]I first heard the phrase "comfort food" when my friend and I finished a 62 day deployment aboard the now decommissioned USS Honolulu. We had already eaten before leaving the boat, but for some reason my buddy just had to have a meal over at the on- base Chili's. "Its a fat-guy thing" he remarked. I couldn't help but remember his words last night as I chowed down on two Jimmy Dean sausage, egg,& cheese biscuits; half a quart of Bordern's Egg Nog; and a half a quart of HEB Rainbow Sherbet (cuz its healthier.) I wasn't really stressed, I just couldn't sleep. So what junk food puts your mind at ease?
Taco Bell. (any Mexican food, really, but the guilty truth is when the shit hits the fan, I want a bean burrito with sour cream eaten in a car. That's a snapshot for ya. Single parent, only child, Southern California childhood.)

Ice cream.

Oh, and oyster stew made with milk, butter, and served with heaping heaps of those little round oyster crackers.

mac 'n cheese.

homemade mac 'n cheese. With real sharp cheddar, a bit of gruyere in the mix for extra punch, and a dash of cayenne sprinkled on top.

Served up with a big hot buttery slice of the mister's fresh-baked sourdough bread. Yum yum, a carboholic's dream!

Me too. God I love potatoes.

It used to be a grilled cheese sandwich and some tomato soup, and then it was macaroni and cheese. But for the longest time it's been potatoes.

Pasta with a Bolognese or Arrabbiata sauce and some crusty bread.

Pesto and gnocchi. Which, in a way, is another potato thing. (Although it is hardly "fast food" that you can pick up at any Bun-n-Run.)

All of those, please.

Mine is grilled cheese sammich and tomato soup. But potatoes anything is a close second. Plain buttered toast is good for when I have a migraine but need to eat something.

And dang, I wish I could get those Jimmy Dean breakfast biscuits here in BC. I used to get them in Texas and I miss them.

Also mac'n'cheese, but oddly, when I want it for comfort I don't want the good stuff - I want bright yellow Kraft dinner.

If not that, then angel hair 'n' meatballs with red sauce, my mom's meatball recipe.

Or a quickie peanut-butter sandwich, made on whole-wheat toast (one side buttered), with rasberry jam. Jam on the butter side.

oh, and fried chicken with spicy batter, crispy as hell, smothered in the big bottle for $1 hot sauce.

Y'know, sometimes, readin' these worthless intertubes, Ah Gets Pissed.

So, I pours myself a manly libation, and breathes through my eyelids, like lava lizards.

And then, after due consideration, I go to The Third Street Diner, and order, at 02:00 EST, or later, an egg cream, and a One Eyed Texas Stack. Not that Sharon remembers, from one of my visits to the next, what the hell a "One Eyed Texas Stack" is.

It's a Greek diner, fer chrissakes, and she only remembers short tippers, and big spenders. Me? I'm just an old, grey bearded, mid-shift pain in the ass...

Oooo an egg cream!

Leona's makes Blue Cheese Steak Fries. It's not on the menu anymore (supposedly a misprint) so you will have to be particularly cunning in order to order it.

Fried potato wedges drowned in a blue cheese alfredo sauce with bacon, diced tomatoes, green onions and probably other delicious things but by that time my brain is overcome by deliciousness.

Miso Soup.

Since I live by myself, and I haven't taught Silver or Saffron to cook, I must get up the gumption to make it myself. When I do, it is soooooooooo goood.

pasta with marinara sauce (like I just ate)
chili cheese dip
mac & cheese (the powder cheese kind or velveeta with soy crumbles and tomatoes)
cheddar cheese melted on a tortilla, rolled up
Lipton Cup-a-Soup, cream of chicken flavor
hot chocolate
cream cheese

Oreos used to be my comfort food, but I was eating way too many, so I don't buy them anymore.

Double bacon cheese Krystal. Actually three double bacon cheese Krystals (c'mon, they're small). With a little daub of ketchup on each. And a vat of icy cold Dr. Pepper. And chili cheese fries. And a defibrillator.

lasagna. i have always identified strongly with garfield.

when i'm sick, i eat peanut butter rice soup, a sort of rice porridge invented for me by my mother when i was a baby and wouldn't eat meat.

then again, there is also the time and place -- no matter how much you argue -- for totino's pizza rolls. this time and place is better if not disclosed in public.

thank you.

If any of you fine folks come touristing through my swamps, I'll fix you a bowl of my chicken and andouille gumbo and you'll write home and ask them to forward your mail to Louisiana from now on.

I just ate a tortilla filled with rice, pepperoni, and some cheap cheeses.

But my favorite comfort food is cold, whole, raw milk. It took me over a decade, but I finally figured out that due to quirks of my digestive system, milk doesn't get fully digested and big molecules pass through my gut into my brain with a mild narcotic effect. I crave milk like some people crave nicotine, but I pretty much quit drinking it because it aggravates the ADD something awful.

Tuna fish and rice casserole is an old standby as well.

In no order: shepherd's pie; beef stew; my husband's version of Riganato; fish sticks (oddly); creamed spinach; my Mom's lasagna; my Mom's chili; potato soup; moussaka; briam, red beans and rice.

Also, Winter is comfort food season!

Holy crap, this thread has made me hungry.

Grilled cheese & tomato soup here, too.
Campbell's cream of mushroom soup
mashed potatoes and gravy
osso buco & mushroom risotto (though it's a bit of work, so I rarely make it)
Lindsay's pitted black olives
