Three positive developments in the last 24 hours! →[More:]
1. A friend who's studying in the States but is going home to Paris soon asked me to join her and her family for Christmas. I thought plane tickets for the days right around Christmas would be too pricey, but I found a great deal on non-budget-airline, totally normal, use-main-airports, one-stop flights, with airlines I can collect miles on, at reasonable times! And I get to fly in
one of these bad boys, which is awesome because I LOVE propeller jets and I've only ever been
on this one, which felt just dangerous enough to make the trip exciting. What makes this really great is that neither of us thought we'd get the chance to see each other for a long time. Her parents are also amazingly warm people, and I can't wait to practice my French again!
2. I went to a party last night at a colleague's apartment and met some really cool people from all over the place, and post-party we headed into town and danced the night away! And people actually danced, not just shuffled! And there was no cover, and drinks were cheap, and the DJ took requests, and I got home thinking, "why don't I do this more often?"! Being an expat where you can't really speak the language of the place you're living can be tough if you haven't really networked and met lots of other people, but last night reaffirmed my confidence in my choice to give living abroad a try for the medium-term.
3. One of my Saturday afternoon teen classes read a small part of
1984 yesterday - we're studying the language of fear and what sorts of things you can say in emotional situations, so I grabbed a few paragraphs from the scene where Winston and O'Brien meet in Room 101 - and everyone seemed really into it; we ended up having a conversation about betrayal that went on much longer than I'd planned.
