MetaChat Radio: One World. Two Tone. Ska from around the world! Starting 9:30AM PST / 12:30PM EST / 5:30 GMT. (Two PM in Newfoundland).[More:]
Starting off mostly slow, and then moving to mostly upbeat. There's ska from everywhere. The Russian stuff is new (to me) and shows some fine musicianship. There's also live Specials, the Dance Hall Crashers doing an acoustic ska track, and more!
So far....

1. Madness - Chipmunks Are Go! (0:51) UK
2. Laurel Aitken - Woman Is Sweeter (2:08) Jamaica
3. Toots & The Maytals - 54-46 (That's My Number) (2:53) Jamaica
4. Laurel Aitken - Negro (3:58) Jamaica
5. Skatalites - Skamaica (4:18) Jamaica
6. Joy Ride - Niji-Rainbow (4:21) Japan
7. Skatalites - I Never Knew (3:38) Jamaica
8. Dance Hall Crashers - Shelley (Acoustic) (3:01) US (S.F.)
9. King Apparatus - You're Not My Type (2:13) Canada (Toronto)
10. St. Petersburg Ska-Jazz Review - Pollution (2:51) Russia

Thanks! The set's still not halfway done, so there's lots of skanking to be had.

Hiya, Z_R. Nice logo, and nice selections.

(Maybe I'm totally projecting, but anyway: I feel like, when setting up a Radio Mecha playlist that focuses on a genre that a lot of people aren't necessarily familiar with, or aren't necessarily big fans of, it's nice to aim for some occasional minor approachability--throw 'em a bone now and again, so to speak. If it's mostly Jamaican music, I'll include some covers of American songs. If I'm playing a lot of obscure stuff, I'll include a few songs that people might have heard of. If it's jazz, I try to stick a few standards in there, and some vocal stuff. If it's Afrobeat, I'll stick 'Sex Machine' in there, to kinda emphasize the lines of influence. Or Antibalas, which is still in print, at least. That explanation was longer than it needed to be. Anyway, it seems like you might kinda have the same idea, and I think that you're doing a really good job of that with this set.)

I agree with throwing in some "anchors" in the mix, some tunes that most may have heard of and then some not-so-well-known stuff for comparison. I still can't listen to The Beat's 'Rotating Head' without thinking of the scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off where he's running home through all the backyards, as that was the music for that scene. :)

31. Pietasters - Out All Night (3:16) US (Washington)
32. Madness - Rockin' In A# (2:29) UK
33. Mustard Plug - Miss Michigan (2:55) US (Michigan)
34. The Offspring - What Happened To You (2:11) US (California)
35. DOBERMAN - Wa-Kyoku (3:44) Japan
36. The Furios - Anchor (2:25) Canada (Vancouver) Los Furios and The Furios are the same band with a bit of a name change. They lost their singer when he was deported back to Mexico (IIRC), and the band lost that influence. :(
37. The Skatomatics - Got to Go (3:33) Canada (Vancouver) Their t-bone player, Corinne, also plays in The Furios. Incestuous, but then Operation Ivy members went on to Rancid and also the Dance Hall Crashers, all to spread the love of ska.
38. Dance Hall Crashers - Day Job (3:34) US (S.F.) Their harmonies remind me of the Andrews Sisters, as Elyse is pretty nasal and Karina isn't and the two together give a good depth of sound.
39. Almighty Bomb Jack - Smash The Reality (3:49) Japan

Wish I knew what the Japanese were singing about, but it's good fun anyways.

Hope that got your Saturday jumping. Thanks for listening, all!
