The presentation is really pretty damn good though - many views, nice clear photographs, Christmas tree in background for the power of suggestion, placed on a weathered chair to support the vintage aspect.
Technically, milennia of pagan solstice celebrations is the reason for the season, but if people want to include Jesus in the party it's OK with me. The nativity is a very lovely story offering many metaphors and insights.
Miko is correct of course, but it's all been supplanted by the desire to make tons of cold, hard cash. It's not about Paganism or Christianity, it's about capitalism. Christmas is the engine that drives retail, and the US economy.
In relation to the original post... I freaking LOVE my vintage chucks. My plaid pair from high school (going on 13 years old or so) are still in better shape than a black pair I got a couple years back.
And I love that we've nearly gone back to the barter system in my social circle. I'm making clothes for friends, and getting knit items, tattoos, and so forth in exchange. (well, already got the tattoos, and drama associated with has been blathered all over here).
It still involves shopping and cash, but not to as great an extent.
I loved the high-tops. I had a purple, red, and black pair, and used to mix'n'match them.
Of course, this was back when they were, I think, $15 a pair. Granted, that was 5 hours' minimum wage labor, but it was more within reach in those days than for kids today - the new ones seem to run much higher.
Black Chucks were part of the uniform for punk/skater/artsy kids. I loved mine. My kids have both had Chucks since birth.
I've noticed a real uptick in religious messages on ebay lately, particularly among those selling kids clothes. Lots of sellers with names like JesusluvsGymboree and pages with dancing angel gifs and bible verses.
I've got some US-made black hi-tops that have been languishing in their boxes for a few years -- a store was unloading them, I liked Chucks, so I stocked up. How much do these things sell for? Should I unload them all and put the money into shoes with orthotic support for my aging feet?
