Myshape doesn't quite live up to its promises.... I'll be going to my aunt and uncle's silver anniversary party in January in LA...which means the temperature could range from 50 to 90F. "Cocktail" attire has been requested; which after consulting with my aunt means formal. →[More:]

I have a linen dress and I have a wool dress, but I think it would be better to wear something midweight--which for me means silk or cotton as I get a rash from synthetics. I bought a silk formal for my cousin's wedding fifteen years ago, but I was also fifty pounds lighter then (and it's still in storage). When I signed up for Myshape there were some glitches when I tried to put in my dimensions, they later sent me an email apologizing: "We know everyone isn't a size 2". I've just checked the site and there's nothing in full figure sizes (grrr), which means I'll have to fight the holiday crowds at the department stores (snarl)....I've checked Lane Bryant's site and they have nothing in natural fibers.

Size 16 fits me in the hips, but is too small for the chest.

Have you tried Torrid? They have some decent things. Would you wear a cotton jersey or silk wrap dress a la Diane von Furstenburg? They look great on everyone, and have a lot of room up top for all different boob sizes. I have a black silk one and love it - I wear it all year round, and in the winter it looks so hot with boots. I bought mine on eBay for about 15 dineros.

Thanks for the suggestions...I checked Torrid, but nothing grabs me. I like what I see on the DvF site, but they only go up to 14 :-(.

What is your price range? Talbots has some nice plus size stuff on their site, as does Igigi. The former is kinda pricy for my tastes, the later is flat-out expensive, IMO. But, both have nice stuff.

Also, in my mind, formal=black tie. Like, guys in tuxes, women in ball gowns. Coctail=semiformal or less. Little black dress, all that.

DvF stuff runs really small, too- my Mom is generally a 2/4, but her DvF wrap dress is an 8.

You know, everyone does wrap dresses these days... I bet you can just get one that isn't a DvF. Mine's not. Shoot, mine's from ebay and cost me all of $15. (but, it is crap synthetic fabric).

I would suggest separates, too. I love the look of formal pants, so confident and sophisticated, like old Hollywood movie glamour.

My aunt has told me she's wearing a long dress and told me she liked the way I looked in the full-length linen. I let her know that semi-formal to me would mean a silk blouse and silk or wool pants, but I think she wants the dress. That DOES look nice, ej--and I think palazzo would be ok, but I'd want a simpler neckline--I plan to bring my opals.

Off to cardio and fighting the mob at Saks!

I didn't mean the dress had to be a DVF, I mentioned it so you would know the style I was talking about. Mine's not a DVF either but I lurves it.

You know, wrap dresses really don't look good on everyone. I don't mean to hijack, but they don't suit my body type at all. (I have big boobs, small hips, and an amazingly short torso, with the top of my hipbone barely an inch from my lowest rib. "Ultra-low-rise" jeans come almost to my navel.) I have a black faux wrap sweater that looks kind of nice, but wrap dresses simply DO. NOT. WORK.

Sorry, brujita. Over to you. I assume that like 98% of the population you have a little more torso than I, so the usual advice probably applies.

Yeah! Torso-less people of world, unite! I must have the same exact bod as you, tangerine. I, too, have NO TORSO. My ribs basically rest on my hips. Pants are the worst. If they stay on when I'm standing up, they cut into my rib cage when I sit down. Everything I wear has to be kind of fitted, darted and structured or I look like I'm being eaten alive by a fabric sample.

Like TPS, I have a long waist (though my Ashkenazic peasant boobs hide that fact)...which means at my proper weight I have to go for the tall-size tops.

Not the greatest picture, but this is me in the linen dress.

I went to Saks, Versace, St. John and Gucci: nothing, though I was treated graciously at Versace---with my backpack!

i can't do the wrap dress unless i'm so fit i can sling on anything.
Maybe get a decent tailored jackety thing with some subtle detailing.
