What are some of your favorite musical movie "moments?" I have three (and found them all on YouTube:[More:]

One that just blew me away with its seemingly contradictory emotional punch: the overdose scene from Trainspotting, set to Lou Reed's "Perfect Day"

One that made me laugh just at the sheer audacity and brilliance of it: the pub beat-down scene from Shaun of the Dead, set to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now"

And one that worked for me because A) it's one of my favorite songs, B) there had been no other "pop" songs in the whole movie up to that point so it came as a surprise, and C) the movie was so very bizarre, it seemed like the perfect crowning touch: the end of Fight Club, set to the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?"

What are some of yours?
Faye Wong dancing to "California Dreamin'" in Chungking Express.

"What a Wonderful World" in Good Morning Vietnam. It's dubbed in Italian, I'm afraid.

The space station approach scene (set to Strauss's Blue Danube) from 2001: A Space Odyssey is a classic.

The threesome scene set to the finale of the William Tell Overture in Clockwork Orange

"Shit List" in Natural Born Killers, especially the dubbed "bee-beep"

AWW man, I parsed that as "Favorite Moments from Musical Movies"... :(

I am coming back, and I am bringing clips from musicals, dammit!

BP, the scene set to Heroes in Christiane F affected me similarly to the Trainspotting scene, probably because the kids in it were anything but heroes.

And yes, Sasshat, I wanted to post Broadway Melody from Singin' in the Rain.

The scene in Snatch when Brad Pitt's character knocks out the much bigger man with one punch and Golden Brown kicks in.

The Little Green Bag strut in Reservoir Dogs.

Ack! No, not musicals...

These are all good! essexjan, I hadn't heard of your movie at all, but that scene looks very very cool. And yes, that great blend of melancholy and beauty.

The snappy Badalamenti music in Twin Peaks, with the dancing little man.
Also from Twin Peaks, The Pink Room from the One-Eyed Jacks scene.
Saturday Night by Bay City Rollers (I think), at the very end of Spirit of '76 (go to 5:29).
Nick Cave's "The Carny" (not the right scene, there's another one where she's remembering the song) in Wings of Desire.

Strange Fruit doing "The Flame Still Burns" at the end of Still Crazy. Makes me cry. (I could only find it with Japanese overdub on the little bits of dialogue, but it still works.)

(I thought it was musicals at first too. But then I love musicals.)

The video is cheeze, but the music in The Last of The Mohichans is just amazing. Makes me want to RUN!

I don't see a lot of movies, and sometimes I have a hard time remembering things, but I liked in Office Space where they do "Damn it feels good to be a gangsta"

I'll have to think up some more.

This one I got. From the movie Camp.
posted by rainbaby 29 November | 19:20
One more from Camp, I'll look for one more then I'm done.
posted by rainbaby 29 November | 19:26
Ok, I'm done, with Judy Garland.

Pretty much all the music in Office Space. Die, Motherfucker, Die (or whatever that song is called (Still - Geto Boys) is pretty effective.

BoPo, I started a new thread to keep yours musical-free, heh.

Here are my top three (may include spoilers):

- Needle in the Hay from The Royal Tenenbaums

- Mad World from Donnie Darko

...and, lest you think I'm a depressive recluse, the winner by a long shot:

- Across 110th Street from Jackie Brown

I couldn't find a good Turkey Lurkey Time! And yes, Mad World, and so much more from Donnie Darko.

Oh, yes!! I love that one, too... I hunted up a CD with that song on it just because of that scene. (And it's such a simple scene... but damn, I love that movie.)

A Clockwork Orange.

There's a scene in 'Crossing Delancey' where Amy Irving is in a late-night diner and a woman comes in, a weird woman, carrying a ghetto blaster. She puts it on the counter, starts a tape and begins to sing "Some Enchanted Evening". It's probably my favourite song ever, and it's a wonderful scene where the Amy character starts to realise for the first time what a pretentious cow she is to reject the Pickle Man.

box's reminds me of another recent one- the scene in Lynch's Inland Empire with the roomful of prostitutes dancing to "The Locomotion."

the jesus lizard's "then comes dudley" being played during the psychotic accountant's rampages in hal hartley's amateur. brilliant.

the scene from lost in translation where my bloody valentine's "sometimes" is playing while they're in the car driving at night reminded me of many nights back home doing the same thing.

the use of music throughout the entire running time of jean-claude lauzon's léolo is particularly effective as well. the soundtrack does a wonderful job of underscoring the full gamut of emotions displayed in that film, as well as adding boldfaced punctuation marks to the viewers' visceral reactions. my god, what an incredible movie that is.

the sequence in taxi driver where travis bickle is listening to jackson browne's "late for the sky" - hell, i could go on for hours listing these moments in martin scorcese films. dude's got a great ear for music and an even better eye for juxtaposition.

sometimes using music during certain scenes will have the opposite effect. for instance, i can't listen to "surfin' bird" by the trashmen or "stuck in the middle with you" by stealer's wheel anymore because of their notorious appearances in pink flamingos and reservoir dogs respectively.

i would love to get a job as a music supervisor for films...

I like the end of "Real Women Have Curves" too, but I can't name the song.

My post from this morning seems to have not worked... anyways, it was cabaret (no one else likes cabaret??). and youtube is blocked from my office. boo hiss.

Ok, two threads with basically the same title. Hey, anyone could be confused!!

I missed this one initially.
And I will go with the opening of Pulp Fiction, where she jumps onto the table, and boom, it goes into Dick Dale.
