First time I ever had tamales I was probably 10. Went with the next door neighbors to their grandparents' house for sunday dinner. Everyone was excited because it was tamale day.
Hormel. From a can. And when I say "from a can," I mean stick the fork in the can.
I remember liking them, actually. They were really exotic, like nothing I'd ever had before. (Because there's really nothing else like them.) My tastes have improved, fortunately.
I'd rather die and burn in hell before eating tamales out of a can. Luckily quality tamales are readily available around here. And if jonmc says they're bad, I'm pretty damn scared of them.
In the 60s, even in the San Fernando Valley, a gringo kid's first exposure to tamales were of the Hormel Canned variety. They did serve as a 'gateway drug' to real tamales, and for that, I am thankful to Hormel.
Blergh. Didn't know they existed. Never really had tamales while growing up in SoCal but they're a big thing in San Antonio around Christmas. At least a couple coworkers would bring in some for everyone. Yummmmm!
