Help me with some unconventional holiday music? I'm having my annual holiday party in early December and have been charged with compiling the playlist. Tell me what your favorite unconventional holiday music is, please. To give you a sense of what I'm looking for, although it's horribly overplayed (in New York bars, at least), I do really like "Fairy Tale of New York," by The Pogues. There's no requirement that the music must be specifically related to Christmas, nor is there any limitation on genre.
Forgot the more inside. Sorry!

This was on the last Christmas CD I burned for someone

Voltaire (Featuring Unto Ashes) - Peace In The Holy Land
The Cruxshadows - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland
Rollins, Henry - Twas the Night Before Christmas
London After Midnight - The Christmas Song
Jingle Cats - Oh Christmas Tree
Belle And Sebastian - O Come O Come Emmanuel
Johnny Cash Neil Young - Little Drummer Boy
Run Dmc - Christmas In Hollis
Rupaul-Santa Baby
Sarah McLachlan & Gordon Lightfoot - Song for A Winter's Night
The Pogues & Kirsty McCall.- Fairytale of New York
The Ramones - Punk Rock Christmas
Tori Amos-Little Drummer Boy
Love Spirals Downwards - Welcome Christmas
This Ascension - Carol of the Bells
Lycia & The Unquiet Void - We Three Kings
Attrition - Silent Night
Prince - Another Lonely Christmas
Faith and the Muse- A Winter Wassail
This Ascension- Carol of the Bells
David Bowie & Bing Crosby - Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy

There are several goth Christmas albums, put out by Projekt records. There's also a few punk and new wave ones.

I love Christmas Rapping by the Waitresses.

EJ... I am now kicking myself for leaving it off my Christmas disk playlist!
That is a great song!

Thanks, both of you -- essexjan, your link also led me to "Father Christmas" by The Kinks, which I think will make it on. Still looking for other suggestions, so please feel free to weigh in.

The Edge of Christmas has Christmas Wrapping, the Kinks song, the Pogues song, and some other real 80s gems on it (like the Pretenders' 2000 Miles, one of my top picks). It's definitely my favorite Christmas album. Also, the Vince Guaraldi suite of music for Charlie Brown specials, both Thanksgiving and Christmas, are great and available on iTunes and eMusic. Another less-known but great Christmas album is the Chieftains' Bells of Dublin, a very atmospheric romp on which the chieftains play very lively duets with people like Elvis Costello, Nanci Griffith, and Jackson Browne.

I like the Christmas Remixed series. I can't listen to classic Christmas music anymore, but with the right amount of funk, it's listenable.

This Christmas - Wham!
Back Door Santa - Clarence Carter
Christmas Rappin' - Kurtis Blow
Christmas in Hollis - Run-DMC
Buck Santa - Jurassic 5
I Hope I Sell A Lot of Records at Christmastime - Princess Superstar
Give the Jew Girl Toys - Sarah Silverman

Death Row Records, and the Dipset crew, have both put out whole hip-hop Christmas albums, but they're kinda terrible. A LaFace Christmas, however, with songs from Boyz II Men, 'Player's Ball'-era Outkast and eyepatch-era TLC, is not without its charms. Ooh, and DJ Riko, and Peanut Butter Wolf's Stone's Throw, have both done some Christmas mixes.

There's an awesome cover of "Fairytale of New York" by No Use for a Name.

Guster has a really kooky song called "Carol of the Meows," which consists entirely of meowing. They've also got "Donde Esta Santa Claus" on the compilation album "Maybe This Christmas, Too?" (That album has also got Rufus Wainwright, but if you buy it you have to put up with Avril Lavigne and others of that ilk.)

The Leevees have a whole album called "Hannukah Rocks," if you're looking for any Jewish holiday songs. (They're half Guster, half the Zambonis.)

This is a blog entry I found last year just after Xmas that I wound up sending to master of the quirky Christmas CD ColdChef. Looks like all of the .mp3s are still active. Go nuts!

Has anyone ever heard a fun, decent version of "Deck Us All With Boston Charlie?" I love Brina's link - the words are great - but don't find the singer too listenable. Anybody got?

Whoops, I meant brujita, obviously! Sorry.

Good lord, I lie down for a nap (derail: I don't know why I ever take afternoon naps -- they're always so troubled and filled with striving for absolutely unattainable things that I'm never refreshed when I wake up, just discombobulated and tired) and I wake up to this treasure trove. Thanks everyone! I'm listening to ufez's compilation right now, and what I've heard so far sounds great.

Oh, and I hope this isn't TMI, Miko, but I fully intend to put Women Drinking Whiskey on my playlist. I know that, strictly speaking, it's not holiday music, but I suspect it will fit in perfectly.

I like the Esquivel space age bachelor pad Christmas album. I'm also very fond of most of Merry Axemas, especially Hotei's rendition of Merry Xmas (War is Over), and Steve Morse's Joy to the World my the hair on my arms stand up.

I heard a choral version sometime in the 80's which might have been WFMT's but I can't find any links--paging Mr. McNally......also " Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer".
