Well, monkeyfilter.com already had the simians cornered, so we had to go 'rodent'; mice, hamsters, gerbils, possums? The rabbit/bunny was clearly the best choice. (And in retrospect, we were so lucky not to go 'kitty' right before the LOLCATs broke out)

What was the original albino bunny I mentioned in that thread? The one before Bunnyhead? Apparently I was quite attached to it.

It was a large white bunny in the lower right corner in the background of the main page, and every thread had a big carrot in the corner. Both were photos, not drawings. Yep you loved that one!

The wayback machine is down right now or I would link to it.

I'll look for the original on my other computer a little later... though it seems like I looked once, to add it to the wiki and had trouble finding it for some reason.

It was a (photo) bunny, because oolong was/is sort of the unofficial mascot of mefi, and the design was something that I had already played with a bit when the site idea came up, so I sort of had something to go forward with right away. I also wanted something a bit playful to communicate an atmosphere of relaxed discussion and fun. I didn't really foresee the bunnyness that the bunny would inspire, which was definitely an organic development here, and not something we instigated (calling people "bunnies", etc.). It was and still is actually a little strange for me, but the bunny is an irresistible juggernaut... which will STOMP ME SENSELESS if I try to interfere. :)
