Ask MeCha: Story ID. I vaguely remember reading either a short story or novel about a woman who was a research assistant and/or wife to a professor who was studying the bog people in ...Scotland? Romance/horror, from what I remember. Any memories stirring?
No memories, but with a quick search, I found this. Could it be Haunted Ground or Lake of Sorrows by Erin Hart? Good luck.

I know this isn't it, but your description reminds me of Patrick McGrath's Asylum: Wife of the guy in charge of a psych institution falls in love with one of the patients. Death, romance and madness ensue.

That novel actually sounds awesome, but I don't think it was it.

I feel like it was an author similar to Margaret Atwood or Anne Proulx....

On preview: Also sounds awesome, youngergirl!

I've read Haunted Ground by Erin Hart, and that's the novel I thought of as well. Not exactly the same, though.

I also liked Mcgrath's Port Mungo. Also a dark romance, but with an ending that made me cry angerly. It was good.

Ah ha. It was Atwood. "The Bog Man," a story in Wilderness Tips, which I guess I haven't reread nearly recently enough.

But thank you all for the other recommendations! It's been so foggy here that reading archaeological horror seems somehow perfect.

Asylum was incredible, a book that made a fool of me in public; I'd flip a page and hiss "OOOOOO!" under my breath, then look around to see everyone on the bus looking askance at me.

Highly recommended. (The book. The glances askance were okay, too.)
