This One Goes Out to My Man... Ronnie James Dio [More:]

In Cardiff last night, Ryan Adams made a joke about Ronnie James Dio being short... and I was the only person in the venue who laughed.

It was kind of a loud guffaw, really, and it was odd because NO ONE ELSE got it. It's a by-product of being only American in a roomful of thousands of Britons.

After the really awkward silence, he said "Well, that one dude laughed... so I guess that means Dio did really well over here."

I don't remember the whole setlist, but he basically did even more "Deadish" versions of some of his best songs (sometimes to their detriment). They did do 'Down in a Hole' - which I hadn't heard before. Overall, it was great; the band were good and Ryan and Neal seem very close. Fantastic four-part harmonies on most stuff. Ryan took most of the solos.

It was a fantastic show. It's easily the best show I've ever seen him play. Sobriety is a good thing. He was still very funny and slightly scatterbrained, but it was endearing rather than irritating (like in Liverpool, last tour).
did he do that song from Robin Hood : Prince of thieves? Because I hate that song.

I've been to two Ryan Adams gigs where he's gone postal when people have yelled out for "Summer of '69". Heh.

You'd think he would have enough sense to change his name.

Or maybe being an ex-metal fan in a room full of indie people.

Oh come on, no Ronnie James Dio love among the brits?

From a small sampling of my friends, every person between the ages of 18 and 25 loves RJD. Probably because of all the love he gets from Tenacious D and South Park.

muddgirl, you gotta remember that Ronnie was an American interloper in the previously British institution known as Black Sabbath.

(also, I am one of the few people in these parts who will publicly proclaim that he likes Bryan Adams better than Ryan Adams).

Who is Ryan Adams?

{ramble alert} It's funny. until a year ago, I thought I knew everything about '60s and '70s rock and pop music. Then I discovered mp3 blogs. I realize now that I may have known half of it at best. I have plunged so deeply into the history that I am missing recently released albums by bands I once followed. Of anything recorded since 2004? Pretty much nada.

You're not missing much, dude.

I asked people... no one remembered Dio well enough to recall his dimunitive stature. ryan was complaining about the piano stool...

never saw the robin hood flick; can't google from here (phone/fleabag hotel in Leeds)

it was actually one of the best-sounding shows i've evet seen. that venue is astounding; he compared it to the Jawas ship from ep4.
fired up on red bull and nicotine inhalers... he also cracked dorky and astophysics.

antics aside... the band he has assembled seemed to be based on a real partnership between he and Casal.

moreover, I got to take ms to a show

Jan : someone yelled out for 'halloweenhead' - and he said 'if you yell at me, I won't play anything...'

that was the only petulant outburst during a three hour show. unexpectedly sober adams
