Here in New York, today is Day Two of the stage hands strike against The League's attempt to take back decades of work rules and benefits won through hard negotiations. The stage hands are not asking for things they don't already have...they are telling the producers they will not give up work rules the producers have already agreed to in the past. For producers, that is part of the cost of doing business. If that's not acceptable, go into another line of work. None of us in any of the unions that represent Broadway workers should be asked to take a step backwards. Let's be clear...when the lawyer for The League is quoted as saying actors are nothing more than itinerant workers (our contract comes up for negotiation next year, by the way) we can easily see The League's attitude and we must stand with our brothers and sisters in Local One. This is a clear attack on the middle class workers that make Broadway happen.
