A chill over my fair city Broadway stagehands on strike; all but 8 Broadway productions shut down. NYTimes headline puts it best: "Strike Darkens Theaters and the Moods of Many Tourists". And TPS'!
NYC has Vegas beat. All we have going on here is a linen washers strike at Vegas's largest contract launderer. The major hotels saw this coming and laid in huge contingency inventories as well as trucking their laundry to Utah and Arizona.

I have a ticket for Rock'n'Roll Tuesday....GRRRR!

There was a documentary about Plastic People of the Universe about 10 years ago.

I've heard NYC is losing millions of dollars a day over this strike.

Arrr, a day before this was announced I got tickets for Broadway for my cousins who are visiting in the beginning of December. Hope it is resolved by then. Any ideas?

Brujita! I was going to get tickets to R'n'R today! Can you change your ticket for later this month and we go togetha? If the strike ends, that is.

I don't think this thing is going to last much longer than a week, at the most.

As much as I support the stagehands, and it seems, from that has come out, that the producers' position is Draconian, it would be a MONUMENTAL bummer to have tickets, months in advance, and plan a vacation around shows (like I did) and the have the shows canceled.

I am glad that the performers seem to be supportive.

Actor Michael Rupert (currently appearing in Legally Blonde) wrote on his MySpace blog today:

Here in New York, today is Day Two of the stage hands strike against The League's attempt to take back decades of work rules and benefits won through hard negotiations. The stage hands are not asking for things they don't already have...they are telling the producers they will not give up work rules the producers have already agreed to in the past. For producers, that is part of the cost of doing business. If that's not acceptable, go into another line of work. None of us in any of the unions that represent Broadway workers should be asked to take a step backwards. Let's be clear...when the lawyer for The League is quoted as saying actors are nothing more than itinerant workers (our contract comes up for negotiation next year, by the way) we can easily see The League's attitude and we must stand with our brothers and sisters in Local One. This is a clear attack on the middle class workers that make Broadway happen.

I like him a lot, so whatever he says, there I am.

Carmina, I'll have to let you know by Tuesday morning. Failing that, would you or any other simpatico NYC bunnies like to join me at the Screwtape Letters on the 22?
