23 year old girl sentenced under Terrorism Act for writing POETRY Perhaps we need to publish a poetic version of this.
Holy demagoguery, Batman! She is not being punished for writing poetry: section 58 of the Terrorism Act has nothing to do with poetry. The fact that she'd written poetry expressing a desire for martyrdom and praising the beheading of westerners was used as evidence in her conviction, it was not the crime itself.

She was sentenced for possessing materials likely to be useful to someone committing or preparing for a terrorist act - amongst other things, a poisoning handbook and manuals for sniper rifles.

Of course, at the moment we have no idea what her punishment will be, but along with most people in Britain I don't much problem with her being found guilty here.

"for possessing materials likely to be useful to someone committing or preparing for a terrorist act". Doesn't that cover most farmers? I mean they generally have a gun, ammonium nitrate, and fuel oil.

If you've ever had an OED fall on you, you know just how true that is.

Indeed, arse_hat. Samina, though, is Muslim, hijab wearing, not white, and not an educated professional with a state-sanctioned reason to write and read such things. (State sanctioned reasons include being a journalist or scholar, I suppose. Being an artist doesn't work, nor does being emo, naive and Islamic, as Samina seems to be.

Terrorists find food useful, as do the rest of us. Does that mean we are all going to be sent to jail for eating? No, obviously not. Evidently the law, and the judges who implement it, is a little more sophisticated than that.

I agree with matthewr: the headline of this post is blatantly misleading and smacks of Fox News/Bill O'Reily style manipulation.

Freedom isn't free. You have to pay for it with Liberty.

Ask yourselves this: would you care one whit about this, if it had been a white supremecisist in Idaho? I doubt it.

pie, Muslims face pretty strong discrimination these days; white people, by and large, don't.

That said, I don't think white kids who post violent fantasies on death-metal boards or what have you should be convicted of the terrorism act either.

The law itself under which she was convicted may be too broad in scope, however, Muslims will not get any special sympathy when from me simply by virtue of being muslims. Your post seems to indicate that this poor innocent kid was unfairly targeted, and I think that you bent the facts a bit to support your agenda.

The first paragraph indicates that she was sentenced for owning a terrorist manual.

Which I personally find pretty fucked up.

But she was not sentenced for writing poetry.

nor does being emo, naive and Islamic, as Samina seems to be.

The jury heard Malik had written extremist poems praising Osama Bin Laden, supporting martyrdom and discussing beheading.

Beheading? This sweet, naive lil' emo kid wrote poems about beheading?

That sure doesn't sound very "emo" to me.

nor does being emo

Since when did we stop bashing emos and started sympathizing with them?

Next you know, there'll be an outcry when they arrest a terrorist furry.

Most farmers don't have copies of The Al-Qaeda Manual and The Mujahideen Poisons Handbook rolling around the cabs of their tractors, though.

As heinous as emo poetry can be, I don't think that's what she got busted for.

Don't get me wrong. I do believe she is a danger, but no more so than that law.

As for the farmers The Mujahideen Poisons Handbook can be handy for dealing with them damn groundhogs.

Oh yeah, I have no doubt that that particular law is overly-broad. But it's incredibly misleading to say that she's being punished for her poetry.

Since when did we stop bashing alleged terrorist farmers and start knocking around groundhogs?

True.

"Since when did we stop bashing alleged terrorist farmers and start knocking around groundhogs?"

Since my cow steped into that hole and twisted her ankle!

I'm sure the groundhog was just emo and naive.

Actually the cow does have watery eyes and dumb bangs and she does make that stupid moooooo sound. I think she may be the emo one....

Maybe I have a different understandin of 'emo' than most of you? Ive seen myspace and livejournal emo blogs with lots of drama, self-harm and harm-of-others threats.. is this generally not common?

I wish my lawn was emo
