Across the Universe Discuss.[More:]I loved it, and I went in not expecting to like it. What got to me was how they got the music perfectly, for the most part. All those little hooks the Beatles put in their songs. . .from harmonies, to unusual chord changes. . .they were all there. If one (ahem) came of age when the Beatles were having their run, those things stick with you, and it was good to hear that someone else heard the same stuff in those songs.

The story, I could take or leave, but the "universe" that the film operated in was just very enjoyable.
As someone who came of age with Nirvana I have to say that even if I found this movie incredibly cheesy I really liked it. For some reason I managed to get over the fact that it's a musical, and it somehow just worked.

This review said it better than I can.

I heard of this a few weeks back and I checked out then what imdb had to say. When I read:

"90% of the songs were recorded live on-set and were not dubbed with studio recordings in post-production."

I knew I had to see it. Does this mean the backing tracks were live too, or just the vocals?

I've wanted to see it, but haven't yet.
Review and an article from the NY Times.

It's really uneven and felt to me like a Best-of-Julie-Taymor/Beatles extravaganza (most of the visuals seemed to be rehash of earlier Taymor projects, which was disappointing). A few of the song renditions are obnoxious (see: Helter Skelter), while pretty much anything with the Ewan McGregor clone is sweet.

I'd still recommend it to just about anybody.

Two of my friends have seen it: one is an indie-music lover from Austin and the other is a hard-rock fan from Michigan. They both loved it and recommended it highly.
