31 October 2007

My dog tore her ACL this morning. [More:] Ok, it's not called an ACL in dogs, but it's the same thing. Leave it to my baby to get a football injury. Wet grass, hard ground, squirel chasing. She's not in any real distress, just hopping and can't do stairs. I have anti-inflamitories to give her, then she has to get a full evaluation in a week (drop off appointment, look out Vet's Office), then we are looking at a surgery. She is not going to like that one bit, or the recovery process. I'm more upset than the dog right now. The important thing is that today she's ok. The much less important thing is that mommy's lasik will have to wait yet another year. ($$$)

GAH!!! I'm staying home with her today.
Oh man, rainbaby, I am so sorry to hear about this. We went through this with our Irish Wolfhound a couple of years back. Er, yeah- it's not cheap, I hate to tell you.

Owie, ow. Poor dog. I hope you have a relaxing day off, or as much relaxing as possible, rainbaby.

Wow RB. I am really sorry & saddened to hear this. Tomorrow, on 11-1, it will have been 4 years for us, me & my cat, since he broke his femur in two different places, broke the fibulae clean off of his knee, and dislocated his hip. It was a long, hard road full of forced cage rest, helping him while he was in the litter box (not pleasant, but what are you going to do when your pet can't stand on his or her own?) and multiple orthopedic surgeries. I tell you this so you know when I say I know exactly how you are feeling you will know I am not just blowing smoke.

I think it is wonderful that you are able to take the day off to spend with your friend. I send the most sincere wish I can for a speedy and full recovery!

Poor pup, I am sorry. Give her a big hug from me!

Mine's been through both acl's and the miniscus (sp?) was bad also. 2K a pop.

But with a young dog, it's unconscionable not to, of one can at all afford it.

I am still paying off the second one.

rb, if you want more details, ins and outs, etc, email me.

Get well soon, Masha.
*crosses fingers that surgery isn't needed*

Oh, rainbaby. I'm sorry. My Al got the nickname 'Chicken Leg' after the surgery to replace his, along with all the other ligaments in his knee. Not cheap, and not a lot of fun for the animal (and by extension, for you), but when you've gotta do it...

Hope your pup gets better soon. *sends virtual dog treats*

Poor thing! Are there places near you that do acupuncture for animals?
posted by brujita 31 October | 11:54
Thanks everybody. Masha is about five, and weighs just under 40 lbs, so she should be fixable. I was told a surgery is in order, it's just a matter of which one and where. Afford it? Well my credit limit can afford it, that's close enough. The thing that's worrying me is her temprament. She'll be hell on a hospital staff, she doesn't let strangers near her - she's a bite hazard. And she is highly energetic, she'll hate recovery exercise restrictions. brujita what does acupuncture do for the doggies, help with surgical recovery?

She seems to have stiffened up a bit, which makes sense, she is fully in hop-along mode now.

Dog Daddy is frantic, wants to talk to the vet himself, wants to come home as soon as possible. . .rrrrr.

Kaylee went through that earlier this year (posted here). Left ACL first and six weeks later her right one went (the vet warned us it might happen). Poor pup. It took a few months but she's back to normal now.

Lots of healing vibes headed out to Masha and big hugs to you and your other half. And if you need any advice or just an ear to talk to, drop me an email.

Forgot to add:

elizard - we called Kaylee "turkey leg" for weeks after her surgery.

Oh man, that is most unfortunate. You know who really likes comforting whuffles? Dogs. Try it, you'll get whuffled back!

At least you didn't dress her up.

Pain relief and it helps speed up the healing process. My parents' lab-Rhodesian ridgeback had it for his arthritis and it helped a lot with his mobility.
