Even sqwickier is that he appears to live in some kind of communal living arrangement (the fridge and toaster oven in the corner) but he doesn't have the door shut.

Dunno, I was assuming it's just a super tiny japanese apartment with no room in the "kitchen" area for anything other than a sink and stove. Or maybe a dorm room.
