I'm a bad bunny. [More:] It's not only because (a) I missed last night's NYC meetup with essexjan, which I promised promised promised I would attend, or because (b) I missed my friend's CD release party in Brooklyn. It's also because I made a woman at the AG store want to kill me. See below.

I can't believe I missed last night's meetup. Excuse: I had to take The Boyfriend shopping at Woodbury Common, and it took all freakin' day.

He didn't get anything. He was supposed to get jeans, shoes and a jacket.

I on the other hand, achieved all my goals:

• Jeans
• Shoes
• Sports bra
• Yoga pants

So as I said, I had a bit of a kerfluffle with the AG store. See, I went in there and tried on a pair of jeans, and I bought them. They were okay, they were suitable, I figured I could at least stop hunting for jeans. I hate buying jeans -- they never fit quite right.

But then I went into J. Crew (because The Boyfriend figured they might have jeans he could wear) and decided to try on another pair. Mind you, I'm on a budget, so I could only afford ONE pair of jeans. But these! They were magic pants. They fit exactly as I wanted them to.

So I go back to AG to return my other jeans. Receipt's still in the bag, it's only been half an hour since I bought the pants ... and they have a no returns policy. But they don't have anything posted, and they didn't tell me about it. It's on the receipt, but they put the receipt in the bag, besides which by the time you get a receipt you've already made a non-refundable purchase.

The Boyfriend tried on a few pairs, but they all had crazy back pockets. I looked at some shirts, but I didn't need shirts.

Finally, after much debate, I go up to the assistant manager and tell her that (a) the policy was not displayed -- it was behind a potted plant!!! -- and (b) no one told me about it, and while it wasn't her policy I was very disappointed in the store. I asked for the number of corporate headquarters.

Went outside the store, called corporate, and the woman said she would call the store immediately and have them make an exception for me. Needless to say, the assistant manager looked like she wanted to KILL me when I went back inside for my refund.

No, seriously, she was super-angry. And all the other employees had gone and hidden in the back room. I wanted to say, "Look, it's nothing against you. It's the policy. I hope I didn't mess up your day, and I love you and all people, and I'm so sorry for the trouble." I did say something to this effect, minus the part about love, and she was like, "It's only retail."

How much bad karma did I rack up yesterday????

But you got magic pants.

It was worth it brina! Great fitting jeans are hard to find!

Good on you for taking a stand, brina. I've never heard of AG. I will not shop here for the principle of the thing. I rarely return anything because I'm lazy and can't be bothered, but still. I would if I were still in the mall. Who doesn't give returns?

Don't feel bad. I RSVPd to attend a benefit party that was held last night. The hostess is a casual friend of mine, as is the owner of the dance company. I decided not to go because I didn't want to get dressed up and I was feeling blah, so I said screw it. This is horrible. I justified that there would be a ton of people there and I wouldn't be missed, and I already paid for my plate --that's what it's for, right? I should have called. This is in poor form. I feel bad about it. I'm an etiquette loser.

That does not sound like racking up bad karma. That sounds like politely but firmly standing up for yourself. Which actually prevents other people from racking up bad karma by walking all over you.

The assistant manager being super-angry is not your fault. It doesn't sound like you did anything particularly evil here, really.

Protecting yourself from crappy store policies is good karma, letting yourself get run over is bad. So good for you. The angry manager is responsible for her own crappy attitude, not you.

The manager is pissed because they think you unjustly went over their heads. But all you did is convince someone with more authority to make an exception. The store manager has to learn to deal with being a lower level manager which sometimes means getting policy set aside by those who set the policy. No karma hit here unless you taunted the manager or something.

You are not a bad bunny. It's a bad business policy. But if your ass looks hot in those JCrew jeans it's all worth it, good karma or bad.

I don't think you're a bad bunny - all's fair in love and clothes shopping and all that. I'm curious though, why people would think that being able to return purchases just because you changed your mind is something that would be expected by default. It seems to me that, if what you bought is in good condition, you have no real right to a refund. I can understand why retailers would do it to gain goodwill etc, but why would customers assume they had that right? Maybe I just don't understand shopping.
