What's the breed of dog that looks like an English sheepdog, but with ringletted fur?
That would be the komondor.

The mop dog! So cute.

I saw that dog at the Westminster Dog Show!

yes, my secret is out -- I love dog shows, and go to 'em. There. Happy?

Yay! Thank you. Ikkyu wouldn't believe me when I kept telling him that I wasn't thinking of a poodle.

Ikkyu: Occhiblu knows her komondor from her poodle. Sheesh!

occhi: What's that dog that's all curly?
ikkyu: A poodle.
occhi: No, no. (waves hands in spirals.) The one that has all the ringlets.
ikkyu: A poodle.
occhi: No, no, no. (bigger spirals with hands.) SPIRALS!
ikkyu: A poodle.
occhi: No. And it's big. With long hair. (frantically spiraling hands.) A big dog with a ringlet spiral afro.
ikkyu: A poodle.
occhi: (sighs.) I'll ask Metachat.

That's the look i wanted to go for.

There's also the puli. It's Hungarian, like Joe Eszterhas.
posted by box 26 October | 19:12
Both of those are Hungarian. Which is odd, because I've never met a Hungarian human with ringletty hair, unless you count one guy with dreadlocks.

It's Hungarian, like Joe Eszterhas.

Don't you mean "like the Gabor sisters"?
posted by mudpuppie 26 October | 19:24
I think he meant "Hungarian, like Ernie Kovacks". Also, we call them Rastadogs at our house.

Ha! I do too, bmarkey.

Oh gaspode, I want to go to a dog show with you. I watch them on television sometimes.

I'm Hungarian! Well, part Hungarian anyway. My sisters and I all have (to varying degrees) very, very almond-shaped eyes. Mine are even kind of odd in that there's an extra little flap of skin along the sides of my nose that obscure that little pink part. (There's a word for all that, but I can't think of it right now.) ANYWAY...we never quite understood why until a few years ago when I was in Budapest and everyone had eyes like that. That was pretty cool.

I also like dog shows.

There's a word for all that, but I can't think of it right now.

Occipital fold?

Let this become the thread where I think of all those words you can't remember.
posted by mudpuppie 27 October | 13:38
Yeah! One of those! You don't often see them on blonde-haired, blue eyed lassies.

I wish I could shrink you down and keep you in my pocket, mudpuppie. Then when I can't think of a word, I'd just be all like, "Hold on a minute, let me consult my Pocket Pups!" We'd kick ass at Scrabble and ace crosswords in no time. It'd be cool.

Can we go in the other direction? What the hell's an aglet?

(I'm also part Hungarian, but nobody seems to know how large a part it is--long story short, my mother's parents didn't tell her she was adopted until the absolute last possible moment, and so she hasn't had much luck chasing down the fine points of her genealogy.)
posted by box 27 October | 13:59
Also, here's a Straight Dope column about eye-folds.
posted by box 27 October | 14:08
An aglet is the plastic bit on the end of your shoelace. (And I didn't even have to google that one.)
posted by mudpuppie 27 October | 14:12
Man, rainbaby. That would rock. The westminster is the best too, because you can go play with all the dogs beforehand.
posted by gaspode 27 October | 14:43
Thanks, pup. I knew the word, but somehow completely forgot what it referred to.

Several members of my family on my mum's side have epicanthic folds over their eyes. We've attributed it to our alleged Blackfoot ancestors.
