Well, I'm off to Indy tomorrow... and it has been a hell of an effort to get ready to be away for 3 whole weeks. If anyone can make the Bloomington meetup on the 11th, please come -- I'll be there.[More:]

I'm headed for a seminar in historical administration. There's not a lot of downtime but there is a big roster of museum visits - one highlight will be doing Conner Prairie's Underground Railroad program, Follow the North Star. We only get two days off in the whole 21-day gig; on one of those, I'm going to rent a car and go to Greenville, OH, to pay respects at Annie Oakley's grave - also stopping to see her pistols and stuff at the Garst Museum. On the other day off I'll head to Bloomington, especially to check out the resources and facilities for this program in folklore and ethnomusicology - and then to eat pizza, hopefully with MetaPeople.

If any of you are in Indianapolis itself, I may be able to get away on an evening or two for a dinner or drinks meetup. Let me know. I may post something on MetaTalk when I get a better handle on my schedule and transportation situation.

With the series on I also might have to find Red Sox Nation somewhere in that city...there's gotta be an Irish pub...
HOPE ME more inside please! So sorrry! Yeesh.

Can I have your job?

Sure, but fair warning: the job comes with the salary.

Wow. I was just in Bloomington unexpectedly. I bought a last-minute ticket to fly out to see a friend of mine who was dying. I didn't make it in time, and ended up staying a few days longer for the funeral.

I hadn't been there since I left three and a half years ago. I'd forgotten: it's one of the most beautiful towns I've seen anywhere in the world. I don't really miss my life there, but I do miss being surrounded by friends in houses with big porches, all within walking or biking distance.

I won't fly back there for your meetup, sadly, but I think I'll have to visit a little more often than I've been doing.

YAY! Miko, I'm going to drop you an email with my phone number. (I'm 20 minutes from downtown.) I only have two things on the schedule while you're in town.

If you're on campus at Bloomington you might want ot see if you can get in to either the Kinsey Institute Library (difficult) or the Hoagy Carmichael room within the library system. I was in Bloomington to give a library talk and was struck by how lovely the campus was. I usually don't think of school campuses as being any great shakes, but this was lovely. Have a great trip!

Go to the music library. It is the biggest. i don't know what security is like any more but we use to play with music school stuff all the time, or just lie under grand pianos.

i was never much one for campus and town has dissolved in independent wackiness quite a bit. i met some traveling ethnomusicologists during one of the world music festivals.

When i'm of more of a right and rested mind, i'll try to think of things you should see.

i think i'll try to make it to meet you somewhere. Maybe you me and fbk in indy? It's not everyday Miko is trapped in the midwest.
Do you know where you're staying in Bton?
wackt plans are already hatching in me wee mind...

I don't have a place to stay in Bloomington - I tried to reserve at a Buddhist retreat, but they were booked. So I figure I'll rent a car and just drive up Sunday morning.

Jessamyn, I definitely will visit the library - you had mentioned it in an AskMe thread, too. Hopefully there'll be a chance to meet somebody in the folklore dept. We'll see how it goes.

Sorry to miss you, tangerine! Eth, fbk? I would LOVE to meet you both - all together if we can, and however it works if that doesn't work. Three weeks gives a lot to work with.

I'm not surprised that the yurts at TCC are booked. The dalai lama has been in town.

The hotels on the bypass(46) are okay. Not the best rooms but far from the worst. They may be cheaper because there are hotels closer to campus. (No fears...they are still close to campus.)

I'm up for whatever. Miko's got my number.
