My turn to ask for clothing advice You guys always come through on questions like this.

I'm mulling over what to wear to a smallish reception at an elegant old hotel, followed by an even smaller dinner at a private club. I'll probably be jetlagged as hell; the people will be familiar and friendly, but I won't have seen some of them for a very long time. It'll be cold out.

Any ideas?
Black. You can get away with slightly more casual items of clothing if they're black, because black automatically looks sleek.

Skirt, sweater, tights, boots? That's my default; depending on the sweater, it can go up or down and the boots make you look pulled together.

Black pants, cashmere sweater or interesting blouse, pointy-toe heels (they make your legs look longer), fabulous earrings and a pretty clutch.

I agree with MGL, boots do look pulled together. An easy look would be a wool dress, tights, boots.
